Lexus GX problems and known issues

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The most serious documented problem on the new GX 550 is recall 25V767. It covers 2024 models whose V35A twin-turbo V6 may contain manufacturing debris that can ruin the main bearings, and dealers inspect them and replace the engine if needed. GX 460 recalls are mostly shared Toyota campaigns for passenger air bag inflators and low-pressure fuel pumps.

CarWhere lists 15 documented GX issues, including 15 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, powertrains, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source. Recall entries come from NHTSA's recall dataset on the DOT open-data portal, which may not list every campaign, so run the specific VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.

V35A engine debris can cause main-bearing failure and stall (recall 25V767) (2024)

Safety recall
Generation:
J250 (GX 550) (2024–present)
Years:
2024
Powertrain:
3.4L twin-turbo V6 (V35A)

Toyota recalled certain 2024 Lexus GX models with the V35A twin-turbo V6, along with 2022–2024 Tundra and LX, because debris left from manufacturing can contaminate the engine and make the main bearings fail. That can stall the engine and cut drive power. Dealers check the #1 main bearing using inspection software and drive data and replace the engine if needed, free of charge. Owner letters went out August 28, 2026. The campaign expands earlier recall 24V381, which covered Tundra and LX only. The 126,691-vehicle count is for the whole campaign, not just the GX.

Symptoms

  • Knocking or rough running from the engine
  • Engine stall or loss of drive power while driving
  • Warning lights on the dash

Check before buying

  • Run the 17-digit VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm the remedy shows as complete
  • Ask whether the #1 main-bearing inspection was done and whether the engine was replaced
  • Ask a Lexus dealer for the repair order showing the recall work

Instrument cluster may not show warnings (recall 26V341) (2024)

Safety recall
Generation:
J250 (GX 550) (2024–present)
Years:
2024
Powertrain:
3.4L twin-turbo V6

Certain 2024 GX models, along with some UX Hybrid, Mirai and Land Cruiser Hybrid vehicles, are covered because the combination meter may fail to display certain warnings or indicators. That breaks FMVSS 101. The fix is a free over-the-air update to the combination meter software, and owner letters were mailed July 23, 2026. The 81,893 count covers every model in the campaign.

Symptoms

  • A warning lamp or indicator that should appear does not show on the cluster

Check before buying

  • Run the 17-digit VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm the remedy shows as complete
  • Confirm the combination meter software update has been applied

Safety recall
Generation:
J250 (GX 550) (2024–present)
Years:
2024–2025
Powertrain:
3.4L twin-turbo V6

On some 2024–2025 GX550s and other Toyota and Lexus models, the load carrying capacity modification label may list inaccurate added-weight values. That breaks FMVSS 110 and could lead an owner to overload the vehicle. Dealers replace the label for free, and owner letters were mailed May 26, 2026. The 8,230 units are for the whole campaign.

Symptoms

  • No mechanical symptom; the label values are wrong

Check before buying

  • Run the 17-digit VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm the remedy shows as complete
  • Check that the load capacity modification label has been replaced

Toyota recalled 9,400 2010 GX 460s built from November 16, 2009 to April 8, 2010. If one of these is driven through a sharp turn at high speed, it can skid sideways and, under some conditions, roll over. Dealers reprogram the Vehicle Stability Control for free; the recall began May 18, 2010.

Symptoms

  • No warning before the event; the risk shows up in abrupt, high-speed cornering

Check before buying

  • Run the 17-digit VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm the remedy shows as complete
  • For an early-build 2010 GX 460, ask for proof of the VSC reprogramming

After long exposure to humidity and temperature cycling the propellant can degrade, and the inflator can rupture and throw metal fragments. Dealers replace the inflator or air bag assembly for free. The 1,754,517 units are for the whole multi-model campaign.

One 2017 GX 460 passenger air bag may not fully inflate (recall 16V937) (2017)

Safety recall
Generation:
J150 (GX 460) (2010–2023)
Years:
2017
Powertrain:

This recall covered just two vehicles: one 2016 4Runner and one 2017 GX460 built November 16, 2016. Their front passenger inflators may have been made without ignition booster tablets, so the air bag might not fully inflate. That breaks FMVSS 208. Dealers had already replaced the passenger air bag modules.

Incorrect GVWR and tire-loading labels on accessorized 2009 GX (recall 09V234) (2009)

Safety recall
Generation:

Years:
2009
Powertrain:

Some 2009 Lexus GX models (and 2006–2009 Sienna) were accessorized at vehicle processing centers, so the accessories pushed them over the GVWR printed on the certification label. The vehicle capacity weight on the tire and loading label was also insufficient. Dealers exchange the labels, add a load carrying capacity modification label if needed and correct the owner's manual, all for free. The 2,204 units cover both models.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2024 Lexus GX 550 affected by the V35A engine recall?

Yes. Recall 25V767 covers certain 2024 GX models with the V35A 3.4L twin-turbo V6, because manufacturing debris can cause main-bearing failure and an engine stall. Dealers inspect the #1 main bearing and replace the engine if needed, free of charge.

What recalls affect the Lexus GX 460?

The GX 460 is included in several passenger frontal air bag inflator recalls (16V340, 17V006, 18V024, 19V005 and 19V741, which cover 2010–2017 depending on year and region), two low-pressure fuel pump recalls (20V012 for 2014–2015 and 20V682 for 2018–2019) and a 2010 stability-control reprogramming (10V159).

Why was the 2010 GX 460 recalled?

Under recall 10V159, 9,400 2010 GX 460s built from November 16, 2009 to April 8, 2010 could skid sideways in a sharp, high-speed turn and, in some conditions, roll over. Dealers reprogrammed the Vehicle Stability Control for free.

Does the Lexus GX 470 have recalls?

Yes. Recall 16V065 replaced the air bag control module on certain 2004–2006 GX470s because the side curtain air bags could deploy without a crash. Recall 09V234 corrected weight-rating labels on some accessorized 2009 GX models.

How do I check if a used GX has open recalls?

Enter the 17-digit VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask a Lexus dealer for repair orders showing completed recall work. Many GX campaigns, including the air bag inflator and fuel pump recalls, are shared with other Toyota and Lexus models.
