Lexus F SPORT vs F SPORT Performance vs F: What Each Badge Means
By CarWhere Research · Updated
F SPORT is a Lexus trim family; F is a separate, purpose-built performance car. Lexus splits F SPORT into Design (styling), Handling (adds Adaptive Variable Suspension) and Performance (adds a stronger powertrain, such as the 472-hp IS 500 or 366-hp RX 500h). Full F models were the IS F, GS F, RC F and the LFA supercar.

F vs F SPORT: two different things
Lexus treats "F" and "F SPORT" as separate ideas. In 2013 Lexus described three ways it sells factory performance: stand-alone F models (then the IS F and LFA), factory-tuned F SPORT versions of regular models, and F SPORT Performance Accessories sold as individual parts.
An F car was built on a different development path, with its own high-output engine. An F SPORT is a grade of a regular Lexus. Early F SPORT packages, starting with the 2011 IS, mainly changed wheels, badges, colors and interior trim, along with some suspension tuning. Lexus says F SPORT spread to SUVs with the 2013 RX and later reached the NX and UX.
Lexus says the "F" goes back to the brand's early days, when the project was known internally as "Circle F" and the first LS was code-named "F1" for Flagship One.
The four-tier ladder Lexus announced in 2021
At the 2021 SEMA Show, Lexus said its performance range would grow from two labels (F SPORT and F) to four tiers, starting with the 2022 IS 500. Each tier includes everything in the one below it.
- F SPORT Design: sport-styled exterior, such as unique front and rear bumpers, grille and wheels.
- F SPORT Handling: adds sport-tuned suspension honed on the track, including Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). The 2022 NX and LX were the first examples Lexus named.
- F SPORT Performance: adds a higher-performance powertrain, as on the 2022 IS 500.
- F: the top tier, with track-tested parts such as bigger brakes, advanced aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fiber.
IS 350 F SPORT Design vs IS 350 F SPORT (2026–2027)
Since the 2026 refresh, the IS comes only as the IS 350, with a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 311 hp and 280 lb-ft, in two grades: F SPORT Design and F SPORT. Rear-wheel-drive cars use an eight-speed automatic, and AWD cars use a six-speed. For 2027, Lexus says sport-tuned Adaptive Variable Suspension and, on RWD cars with the eight-speed, a Torsen limited-slip rear differential support the car's handling.
Lexus' releases do not list chassis differences between the two IS grades. The visible differences are an available rear spoiler and optional red brake calipers on the F SPORT, plus an F SPORT-only Radiant Red interior. For 2027 the F SPORT Design gets a new 19-inch black and machined wheel and a standard heated steering wheel. Both of Lexus' limited Special Appearance Packages (Hakugin Matte White for 2026, Envious green for 2027) are built on the IS 350 F SPORT. The 2026 package also included the Handling Package.
On 2027 pricing, the IS 350 F SPORT costs $2,300 more than the F SPORT Design: $49,845 vs $47,545 for RWD, including the $1,395 delivery, processing and handling fee.
F SPORT Performance: IS 500, RX 500h and TX 500h
The 2022 IS 500 was the first F SPORT Performance model, built for North America. It used a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 rated at 472 hp at 7,100 rpm and 395 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm. The rear-drive F SPORT's Dynamic Handling Package (Adaptive Variable Suspension plus a Torsen limited-slip differential) came standard. Lexus ended the run with the 2025 IS 500 Ultimate Edition, limited to 500 units in North America, and the 2026 IS dropped to a single IS 350 variant.
In SUVs the badge now means a turbo hybrid. The 2027 RX 500h F SPORT Performance combines a 2.4-liter turbo four with front and rear electric motors for 366 hp and 406 lb-ft, using DIRECT4 all-wheel drive. It gets AVS, six-piston front brake calipers with 15.74-inch rotors, and available Dynamic Rear Steering with up to 4 degrees of rear-wheel angle. The 2027 TX 500h comes only as F SPORT Performance (Premium or Luxury), with the same 366 hp, standard AVS and standard Dynamic Rear Steering.
F SPORT Handling across the SUV lineup
F SPORT Handling is the tier for buyers who want the chassis upgrades without a different powertrain. Adaptive Variable Suspension is the common thread, but each model adds its own hardware.
- RX 350 F SPORT Handling (2027): AVS plus opposed six-piston front calipers on 15.74-inch rotors; 275-hp 2.4L turbo.
- TX 350 F SPORT Handling (added for 2025): standard AVS and exclusive 22-inch matte black wheels; AWD only.
- LX 600 / LX 700h F SPORT Handling (2027): front and rear performance dampers, a Torsen LSD and a rear stabilizer, plus F SPORT tuning of the steering and AVS; standard red calipers for 2027.
- NX F SPORT Handling (2026): AVS and front and rear performance dampers, offered on all four NX powertrains. For 2027 the NX grade is simply called F SPORT, with AVS as an F SPORT exclusive.
- UX 300h F SPORT Handling (2026): builds on F SPORT Design with AVS, sport seats and a 12.3-inch touchscreen.
The full F cars: IS F, LFA, RC F and GS F
IS F: the first Lexus to wear the F badge, launched for the 2008 model year. Its 5.0-liter V8 made 416 hp at 6,600 rpm and 371 lb-ft, through an eight-speed transmission, with Brembo brakes and a Torsen rear differential. The last IS F release on Lexus' US newsroom covers the 2014 model year.
LFA: a carbon-fiber supercar with a 4.8-liter V10 rated at 552 hp and 354 lb-ft and carbon ceramic brakes. Takumi craftsmen built 500 by hand over a two-year production run. A Nürburgring edition added 10 hp. Lexus showed an all-electric LFA Concept in December 2025.
RC F: arrived for the 2015 model year with a 467-hp version of the 5.0-liter V8 and an available torque-vectoring differential. It rose to 472 hp for 2020, alongside a lighter RC F Track Edition with carbon ceramic brakes. The RC and RC F ended after the 2025 model year with a single-spec RC F Final Edition.
GS F: the midsize F sedan, sold for the 2016–2020 model years. It used a 467-hp, 389-lb-ft V8, a torque-vectoring differential (standard by 2020), adaptive suspension and Brembo brakes with six-piston front calipers. The GS line, GS F included, ended after the 2020 model year.
How to tell the badges apart in a listing
On a Lexus, the grade name says which tier you are looking at. "F SPORT Design" means a styling package. "F SPORT Handling" means adaptive suspension and, on some models, bigger brakes or a limited-slip differential. "F SPORT Performance" means a different, more powerful powertrain. A car badged only "F" (IS F, GS F, RC F) is a separate model with its own V8.
Lexus' naming varies by year and model. The 2026 NX used F SPORT Handling while the 2027 NX uses plain F SPORT, and older models such as the RC 350 used F SPORT as a single grade. Check the exact grade name for the model year in question.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Lexus F SPORT the same as an F model?
No. F SPORT is a grade of a regular Lexus with styling and, depending on tier, chassis upgrades. F models such as the IS F, GS F and RC F were separate high-performance cars with their own 5.0-liter V8 engines and unique hardware.
What is the difference between F SPORT Design and F SPORT Handling?
F SPORT Design is mostly appearance: unique bumpers, grille, wheels and badges. F SPORT Handling adds track-tuned suspension, including Adaptive Variable Suspension, and on some models extra hardware such as six-piston front brakes (RX) or a Torsen LSD and performance dampers (LX).
What does F SPORT Performance add?
A higher-output powertrain on top of the Handling hardware. Examples are the 472-hp V8 in the 2022–2025 IS 500 and the 366-hp turbo hybrid in the 2027 RX 500h and TX 500h, which also get Dynamic Rear Steering (available on RX, standard on TX).
How much horsepower does the IS 350 F SPORT have?
The 2026 and 2027 IS 350 F SPORT and F SPORT Design use a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 311 hp and 280 lb-ft. Rear-drive cars use an eight-speed automatic and AWD cars a six-speed.
Is there still a Lexus IS 500?
Not for 2026 or 2027. Lexus sold the IS 500 F SPORT Performance from the 2022 model year and closed the run with the 500-unit 2025 IS 500 Ultimate Edition. The 2026 and 2027 IS come only as the IS 350.
Is the Lexus RC F still made?
No. Lexus said the RC and RC F would be discontinued at the end of the 2025 model year. The last version was the single-spec RC F Final Edition, with a 472-hp naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8.
How many Lexus LFAs were built?
Lexus says takumi craftsmen built 500 LFA supercars by hand for global distribution over a two-year production run. Each used a 552-hp, 4.8-liter V10.
Which current Lexus models offer F SPORT Handling?
Based on Lexus' latest releases: the 2027 RX 350, 2027 TX 350, 2027 LX 600 and LX 700h, the 2026 NX (all powertrains) and the 2026 UX 300h. The 2027 NX renames its sport grade to simply F SPORT.
