P0101: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance
P0101 means the mass air flow (MAF) sensor reading does not make sense compared with what the engine computer expects from other sensors, even though the circuit itself is working.
Standard title per SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 · Updated 2026-11-07 · By CarWhere Research
How P0101 sets
The powertrain control module (PCM) compares the MAF reading with an airflow value calculated from throttle position, engine speed, manifold pressure and sometimes barometric pressure. If the MAF reading is consistently higher or lower than that model predicts, P0101 sets. The comparison logic and limits are manufacturer-specific.
Common causes of P0101
Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.
- Dirty or contaminated MAF sensing element
- Air leaks between the MAF sensor and throttle body
- Clogged or incorrectly installed air filter
- Oiled aftermarket air filter contaminating the sensor
- Failing MAF sensor
- Vacuum leak or faulty PCV valve
- Restricted exhaust in some cases
P0101 symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hesitation or sluggish acceleration
- Rough idle or stalling
- Poor fuel economy
- Hard starting
How P0101 is diagnosed
- Scan for codes; lean or rich codes such as P0171 support the diagnosis
- Inspect the air filter and intake duct for leaks, cracks or loose clamps
- Smoke test the intake for vacuum leaks
- Compare MAF readings at idle and at a steady higher rpm to expected values
- Clean the MAF element with dedicated MAF cleaner and retest
- Replace the MAF only if readings remain incorrect after leaks are fixed
Typical fixes for P0101
- Clean the MAF sensor
- Repair intake leaks or replace a cracked duct
- Replace the air filter
- Replace the MAF sensor
- Repair vacuum leaks or replace the PCV valve
Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.
Manufacturer notes
Commonly reported on GM, Ford and Nissan vehicles. Some manufacturers define this code with additional conditions; check factory service information.

P0101 FAQ
What does code P0101 mean?
P0101 means the mass air flow (MAF) sensor reading does not make sense compared with what the engine computer expects from other sensors, even though the circuit itself is working. The standard definition is "Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance."
Can I drive with a P0101 code?
Yes, short-term driving is generally fine, but the engine may hesitate, idle poorly or use more fuel. Address it within days, since an incorrect airflow reading can lead to lean or rich running.
Can an oiled air filter cause P0101?
Yes. Excess oil from some reusable filters can coat the MAF element and skew its readings.
Is P0101 always a bad MAF sensor?
No. Intake leaks and contamination are common causes, so inspect and clean before replacing the sensor.
