P0103: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input
P0103 means the mass air flow (MAF) sensor signal is higher than the engine computer believes is possible for current conditions.
Standard title per SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 · Updated 2026-11-07 · By CarWhere Research
How P0103 sets
The powertrain control module (PCM) watches the MAF sensor signal and flags it when it rises above the highest plausible value for a set time. A signal wire shorted to a voltage source, a failing sensor or electrical interference can produce this reading. The exact threshold depends on the sensor type and manufacturer.
Common causes of P0103
Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.
- Failed MAF sensor
- Signal wire shorted to a voltage source
- Electrical interference from nearby ignition or charging components
- Corroded connector or poor ground
- Aftermarket intake changing airflow across the sensor
- PCM fault (rare)
P0103 symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rich running or black exhaust smoke
- Hesitation or stumble
- Rough idle or stalling
- Reduced fuel economy
How P0103 is diagnosed
- Scan for codes and freeze frame data
- Inspect the MAF harness for chafing against other wires
- Check the MAF ground and signal circuits
- Compare live MAF readings to expected values with the engine off and at idle
- Check for aftermarket intake parts and ignition wiring routed near the sensor
- Replace the sensor once wiring is confirmed good
Typical fixes for P0103
- Replace the MAF sensor
- Repair a wire shorted to voltage
- Repair a poor ground
- Reroute wiring away from sources of interference
- Reinstall the factory intake
Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.

P0103 FAQ
What does code P0103 mean?
P0103 means the mass air flow (MAF) sensor signal is higher than the engine computer believes is possible for current conditions. The standard definition is "Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input."
Can I drive with a P0103 code?
Generally you can drive briefly, but the engine may run rich, hesitate or stall. Get it diagnosed within a few days to avoid fouling spark plugs or overheating the catalytic converter.
Does P0103 cause black smoke?
It can, because a high MAF reading makes the PCM add extra fuel, which may produce a rich condition.
Can a cold air intake cause P0103?
An intake with a different tube diameter or sensor placement can make the sensor read outside its expected range on some engines.
