P2101: Throttle Actuator "A" Control Motor Circuit Range/Performance
P2101 means the engine computer sees that the electronic throttle motor is not moving the throttle plate as commanded, or its circuit behaves outside the expected range.
Standard title per SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 · Updated 2026-11-07 · By CarWhere Research
How P2101 sets
With electronic throttle control, the powertrain control module (PCM) drives a small motor to open and close the throttle plate and checks the result with throttle position sensors. If the motor current, duty cycle, or resulting position does not match what was commanded, the PCM sets P2101 and usually limits throttle opening. Specific criteria are manufacturer-specific.
Common causes of P2101
Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.
- Carbon buildup causing the throttle plate to bind
- Failing throttle body motor or gears
- Corroded or loose throttle body connector
- Damaged wiring between the throttle body and the PCM
- Weak battery or charging system voltage
- Faulty throttle position sensor in the throttle body
- PCM fault or software issue (less common)
P2101 symptoms
- Check engine light and/or electronic throttle warning light on
- Reduced power or limp mode
- Poor or no throttle response
- Rough or high idle
- Stalling in some cases
How P2101 is diagnosed
- Scan for all codes and freeze frame; note any throttle position or voltage codes.
- Check battery and charging voltage, since low voltage can affect motor control.
- With the engine off and key removed, inspect the throttle bore and plate for carbon or obstruction.
- Inspect the connector and wiring for corrosion, spread terminals, or chafing.
- Watch commanded versus actual throttle position in live data.
- Test motor circuit resistance and wiring continuity per factory procedures.
Typical fixes for P2101
- Clean the throttle body and perform a throttle relearn if required
- Repair the connector or wiring
- Replace the electronic throttle body
- Correct battery or charging system problems
- Update or replace the PCM if confirmed faulty
Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.

P2101 FAQ
What does code P2101 mean?
P2101 means the engine computer sees that the electronic throttle motor is not moving the throttle plate as commanded, or its circuit behaves outside the expected range. The standard definition is "Throttle Actuator "A" Control Motor Circuit Range/Performance."
Can I drive with a P2101 code?
Drive only as far as needed to get it serviced. Many vehicles enter a reduced-power or limp mode with this code, which can make merging or climbing hills unsafe.
Can cleaning the throttle body fix P2101?
Sometimes. If carbon is making the plate stick, cleaning and a throttle relearn may resolve it, but a worn motor or gear set needs a new throttle body.
Why does the car go into limp mode with P2101?
When the computer cannot trust throttle control, it restricts opening to keep engine power predictable and reduce the risk of unintended acceleration.
