P2177: System Too Lean Off Idle (Bank 1)
P2177 means the engine computer found bank 1 running lean at cruise or higher engine speeds, even though the mixture may be acceptable at idle.
Standard title per SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 · Updated 2026-11-07 · By CarWhere Research
How P2177 sets
The powertrain control module (PCM) tracks fuel trim in different operating ranges. When the long-term correction for bank 1 has to add more fuel than allowed during off-idle operation, P2177 sets. Because it specifically looks above idle, it often points to air metering or fuel delivery under load. Limits are manufacturer-specific.
Common causes of P2177
Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.
- Dirty or failing mass air flow (MAF) sensor
- Weak fuel pump or clogged fuel filter
- Restricted fuel injectors
- Unmetered air leak after the MAF sensor
- Faulty fuel pressure regulator
- Exhaust leak ahead of the upstream oxygen sensor
P2177 symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hesitation or stumble on acceleration
- Reduced power under load
- Possible misfires at higher speeds
How P2177 is diagnosed
- Scan for codes and freeze frame; note engine load and speed when it set.
- Compare fuel trims at idle versus 2,500 rpm; trims that worsen with speed point to fuel delivery or MAF.
- Check MAF readings against expected values for the engine.
- Test fuel pressure and volume under load.
- Inspect the intake ducting between the MAF and throttle body for leaks.
- Check for exhaust leaks before the upstream sensor.
Typical fixes for P2177
- Clean or replace the MAF sensor
- Replace the fuel pump or fuel filter
- Clean or replace restricted injectors
- Repair intake duct or vacuum leaks
- Repair exhaust leaks
Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.
Manufacturer notes
P2177 and its related codes are commonly reported on some Ford engines; check factory service information and bulletins for the specific engine.

P2177 FAQ
What does code P2177 mean?
P2177 means the engine computer found bank 1 running lean at cruise or higher engine speeds, even though the mixture may be acceptable at idle. The standard definition is "System Too Lean Off Idle (Bank 1)."
Can I drive with a P2177 code?
Usually yes for short distances, but schedule diagnosis within days. A lean mixture under load can cause hesitation, misfires, and higher combustion temperatures.
What does off idle mean in P2177?
It refers to operating conditions above idle, such as cruising or accelerating, where the computer tracks fuel correction separately.
Why would the engine be lean off idle but fine at idle?
Fuel delivery problems and MAF errors tend to grow with airflow, while vacuum leaks matter most at idle, so the pattern helps narrow the cause.
