Rivian R1S generations and updates
| Generation / update | Years | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| First generation (Gen 1) | 2022–2024 | Deliveries began December 2021; the only 2022 EPA entry is the four-motor Quad. Dual-Motor and Standard/Standard+/Large/Max packs followed. CCS1 charge port.[21][8][15] |
| Second generation (Gen 2) | 2025–present | Introduced June 2024 with in-house motors, Tri- and Quad-Motor options, LFP Standard pack and reworked suspension for a smoother R1S ride. Native NACS from 2026; Premium/Performance/Quad trims and optional captain's chairs for 2027.[3][5][18][4] |
Rivian R1S range by configuration
Range on the 2025 R1S depends on battery pack and wheel size. EPA figures: Dual Standard 258–270 miles, Dual Large 289–329 miles, Dual Large Plus 292–330 miles, Dual Max 370–410 miles and Tri Max 329–371 miles. The 22-inch road wheel posts the highest numbers and the 20-inch all-terrain setup the lowest.
For 2027 the best R1S figure is the Premium Long Range on 22-inch wheels at 410 miles; the Quad is 374 miles and the Performance 371 miles.[12][14]
What was new for the 2025 R1S
2025 was the first model year of the second-generation R1S. Rivian reworked the suspension and air springs for a smoother ride, moved to in-house motors, added a Tri-Motor option and a lithium iron phosphate Standard pack, and replaced the electronics with a zonal architecture using 7 ECUs instead of 17.
The 2025 R1S still has a CCS1 port; native NACS arrived with model year 2026. Rivian's 2027 update renamed trims Premium, Performance and Quad and added second-row captain's chairs.[3][5][18][4]
R1S price and how Rivian sells it
The second-generation R1S launched at $75,900 in June 2024. The 2027 R1S is $83,990 (Premium), $106,990 (Performance) and $121,990 (Quad) before the $1,895 destination fee.
Rivian sells directly to consumers, so the price on rivian.com is the price for a new R1S; there is no dealer markup or negotiation.[3][1][2][22]
Battery packs and warranty
Buying a used R1S
Match the VIN to its configuration: Gen 1 (2022–2024) packs differ from Gen 2 packs, and the 2022–2023 R1S has R1S-only recalls for side curtain air bag fasteners and reverse-light visibility. Check that over-the-air recalls such as the Highway Assist update show as completed, and that service-visit recalls like the toe-link fix have been done.[15][23][24][25][26]
Rivian R1S recalls and known issues
Unit counts are NHTSA's 'potentially affected' totals for the whole campaign, which can include other Rivian models named in the scope. Recalls are listed from NHTSA's public recall dataset; enter a VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether a specific vehicle is affected. Recall 26V508 (2025–2026 front turn signals) expands 25V387.
