Rivian R1T towing capacity

Maximum rated towing: 11,000 lb. Gen 2 R1T with the Max pack (Dual, Tri or Quad); Standard and Large packs are rated 7,700 lbs. All Gen 1 R1T configurations are rated 11,000 lbs. A weight-distributing hitch is required for the maximum; without one the limit is 5,000 lbs.[1]

Rivian R1T generations and updates

Rivian R1T generations and major updates
Generation / updateYearsWhat changed
First generation (Gen 1)2022–2024R1T deliveries began September 2021; the only 2022 EPA entry is the four-motor Quad. Dual-Motor and Standard/Standard+/Large/Max packs followed. CCS1 charge port.[20][8][15]
Second generation (Gen 2)2025–presentIntroduced June 2024: in-house motors, Tri-Motor and new Quad-Motor, LFP Standard pack, zonal electronics (17 ECUs cut to 7), 11-camera autonomy hardware. Native NACS port from model year 2026; trims renamed Premium/Performance/Quad for 2027.[4][5][18][3]

What a new R1T costs and how you buy it

Rivian lists one price per configuration on rivian.com: the 2027 R1T starts at $79,990 (Premium), $100,990 (Performance) and $115,990 (Quad), plus a $1,895 destination fee. Options such as the Long Range battery, Power Upgrade and wheels add to that.

Rivian sells its vehicles directly to consumers rather than through franchised dealers, so there is no dealer markup or haggling on a new R1T — you configure and order online, and taxes and registration fees are added by state.[1][2][21]

Which 2027 trim to pick

For 2027 Rivian dropped motor-count names for three trims. Premium is dual-motor with 533 hp (665 hp with the Power Upgrade) and the longest range: EPA 329 miles standard or up to 420 miles with Long Range. Performance adds a third motor for 850 hp and 371 miles. Quad puts a motor at each wheel for 1,025 hp and 0–60 in as quick as 2.5 seconds, with 374 miles of range.

If range and towing matter more than acceleration, Premium Long Range is the efficiency pick; Quad is the off-road and performance halo.[3][1]

R1T towing capacity

Rivian rates Gen 2 R1T trucks with the Max battery at 11,000 lbs whether they have two, three or four motors; Standard- and Large-pack trucks are rated 7,700 lbs. Every Gen 1 R1T (2022–2024) is rated 11,000 lbs.

The maximum requires a weight-distributing hitch. Without one, Rivian limits towing to 5,000 lbs. Expect range to drop sharply with a heavy trailer.[1]

Gen 1 vs Gen 2: what changed in 2025

The second-generation R1T, introduced in June 2024 for model year 2025, kept the exterior but replaced most of the hardware: in-house motors, a new Tri-Motor and a 1,025-hp Quad-Motor, redesigned Large and Max packs, a lithium iron phosphate Standard pack, and an electrical architecture that cuts the number of ECUs from 17 to 7.

Starting with model year 2026, R1T trucks have a native NACS charge port; 2022–2025 trucks use CCS1 and need Rivian's NACS DC adapter at Tesla Superchargers.[4][18]

Buying a used R1T: what to check

Confirm the battery pack from the configuration, since Gen 1 usable capacity ranges from 106 kWh (Standard) to 141 kWh (Max). Check how much battery and drive-system warranty remains: 8 years with 120,000, 150,000 or 175,000 miles depending on configuration, measured from the original delivery date.

Run the VIN through NHTSA for open recalls. Several Rivian recalls are fixed over the air, but others — the 2022 steering-knuckle fastener, accelerator pedal and toe-link recalls — need a service visit.[15][17][22][23][24]

Unit counts are NHTSA's 'potentially affected' totals for the whole campaign, which can include other Rivian models named in the scope. Recalls are listed from NHTSA's public recall dataset; enter a VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether a specific vehicle is affected.
