Tesla Model X generations and updates
| Generation / update | Years | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Original Model X | 2016–2021 | Deliveries began in September 2015 with falcon wing rear doors and seating for up to seven. Packs went from 60–100 kWh to Long Range naming in 2019.[8][17][9][5] |
| 2021 update (Plaid era) | 2021–2026 | Tesla began delivering new versions of Model X with higher performance and range in 2021; EPA first lists Model X Plaid for 2022. The Fremont line was decommissioned in 2026.[18][1][19] |
Model X Plaid vs Model X
Since 2022 Model X has come in two versions: the dual-motor Model X and the three-motor Plaid. The dual-motor car always has the longer EPA rating. For 2026 it is rated at 352 miles and 105 MPGe combined. The 2026 Plaid gets 335 miles and 100 MPGe, and its 240-volt charge time is shorter (12.0 vs 14.0 hours).
Through 2025, EPA rated the Plaid separately on 20-inch and 22-inch wheels. The bigger wheels cost 20–26 miles depending on year, so check the wheels on any Plaid you look at.[1][3][2]
2024 Tesla Model X: the numbers
fueleconomy.gov lists three 2024 Model X variants. The dual-motor Model X is rated at 335 miles and 100 MPGe combined (33.6 kWh/100 mi). The Plaid on 20-inch wheels is rated at 326 miles and 98 MPGe. The Plaid on 22-inch wheels is rated at 300 miles and 90 MPGe. EPA lists a 14-hour 240-volt charge time for both the Model X and the 20-inch Plaid.
2024 cars are covered by several recent campaigns, including the warning-light font update (24V051000) and the rearview-camera circuit board recall (25V002000), which also covers 2023–2025 Model X. Both were fixed over the air, with computer replacement where needed for the second.[13][20][21]
Model X history, 2016–2026
Tesla began Model X deliveries in September 2015. Tesla's filings highlight the falcon wing rear doors and seating for up to seven adults. Early cars used 60, 75, 90 and 100 kWh packs, and the 2017 100D was rated at 295 miles. Long Range naming arrived for 2019, and the 2020 Long Range Plus reached 351 miles.
Tesla's fiscal 2021 10-K says new versions of Model X with more performance and range went on sale in 2021. EPA first lists the Plaid for 2022. In 2026 Tesla decommissioned the Fremont Model S and X lines to install Optimus robot production, according to its Q2 2026 update.[8][17][18][16][10][6][1][19]
Battery warranty and used-buying checks
Tesla's current warranty covers the Model X battery and drive unit for 8 years or 150,000 miles with at least 70% capacity retention. A Model X bought before that warranty's effective date keeps the terms in force when it was sold. Tesla's fiscal 2015–2018 filings describe an 8-year, infinite-mile battery warranty that did not cover capacity loss.
Several early Model X recalls needed a service visit: third-row seats (16V192000), second-row recliner cables (17V639000), steering-motor bolts on 2015–2016 cars (20V062000) and roof trim (24V615000). Make sure these were completed. Tesla sells directly, so a new Model X has no dealer negotiation, but a used one should be priced on its year, variant and wheels.[14][8][15][22][23][24][25]
