By CarWhere Research · Updated

For 2026, the Model Y Long Range RWD (357 miles) out-ranges the dual-motor Model X (352 miles) by EPA's numbers. Model Y is also much more efficient: 24–32 kWh/100 mi against 32–34 for Model X. Both seat up to seven, but Model X production ended in 2026.

Key differences

  • Range: the 2026 Model Y Long Range RWD (357 mi) edges the 2026 Model X (352 mi) on EPA's rating.
  • Efficiency: in each model year 2024–2026, every Model Y variant uses less energy per mile than every Model X variant.
  • Seating: Tesla lists both with seating for up to seven adults; Model X is the larger mid-size SUV.
  • Performance: only Model X offers a three-motor Plaid; Model Y's quickest version is the Performance AWD.
  • Availability: Model X production ended in 2026; Model Y remains in production.

Range: Model Y now matches or beats Model X

In 2024, Model X had the range edge. The dual-motor Model X was rated at 335 miles, and the best Model Y (Long Range RWD) at 320. By 2026 that had reversed. The Model Y Long Range RWD is rated at 357 miles and the Long Range AWD at 327, against 352 for the Model X and 335 for the Model X Plaid.[1][2][5][6]

Efficiency and charging cost

Model Y uses far less energy per mile. The 2026 Model Y Standard RWD on 18-inch wheels is rated at 24.3 kWh/100 mi (138 MPGe). The 2026 Model X uses 32.2 kWh/100 mi (105 MPGe). At the same electricity price, that Model Y uses about 25% less energy per mile, so it costs about 25% less to charge per mile.[5][6]

Size, seating and availability

Tesla's 10-K calls Model X a mid-size SUV and Model Y a compact SUV built on the Model 3 platform. Both have seating for up to seven adults. Model X has falcon wing rear doors. Of the two, only Model X has a three-motor Plaid version on fueleconomy.gov.

Availability is the deciding difference now. Tesla's Q2 2026 update says the Model S and Model X lines at Fremont were decommissioned, while Model Y is still built in several factories. A Model X today will usually mean remaining 2026 inventory or a used car.[7][8][9][5][6]
