Toyota 4.0L V6 (1GR-FE): years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The 1GR-FE is Toyota's 4.0-liter DOHC V6. It powered the 4Runner through 2024, the 2005–2015 Tacoma, the 2007–2014 Tundra and the 2007–2014 FJ Cruiser. With dual VVT-i it makes 270 hp and 278 lb-ft in the 2010–2024 4Runner; the Tacoma version made 236 hp and 266 lb-ft.

Toyota's owner guides list the 4.0L six as the 1GR-FE in the 4Runner, Tacoma and Tundra. Output depends on whether the engine has dual independent VVT-i on both intake and exhaust cams. The Tacoma kept a 236 hp, 266 lb-ft version through 2015. The Tundra's base V6 gained dual VVT-i for 2011, rising from 236 to 270 hp and from 266 to 278 lb-ft, and the 2010 fifth-generation 4Runner used the same 270 hp rating.

The FJ Cruiser's dual VVT-i version was rated at 260 hp and 271 lb-ft. Toyota paired the engine with a five-speed automatic, plus a six-speed manual in the Tacoma and FJ Cruiser. It was phased out as the 2015 Tundra went V8-only, the 2016 Tacoma moved to the 3.5L V6 and the 2025 4Runner moved to the 2.4L turbo.
