Toyota Grand Highlander problems
The most-documented Toyota Grand Highlander problems are recalls rather than long-term wear items: 2024 curtain airbags that may deploy outside an open window, an instrument panel that can stay blank at startup, a backup-camera software fault, and 2026 rear axle carriers and front steering knuckles that may have been made incorrectly.
Toyota 4Runner problems
The most-documented Toyota 4Runner problems are Takata passenger airbag inflators on 2010–2016 trucks, which were recalled in several waves by region and then replaced again, fuel pumps that can fail on 2014–2015 and 2018–2019 models, floor-mat pedal entrapment on 2009 and older models, and an instrument panel that can stay blank on the 2025 4Runner.

Toyota Prius problems
The most-documented Toyota Prius problem is the third-generation inverter: the Intelligent Power Module can fail and stall 2010–2015 Prius and 2012–2017 Prius v hybrids, leading to recalls 14V053, 15V449, 18V684 and 20V369 and a court-approved warranty extension to 20 years. Other recalls cover XW20 water pumps and steering shafts and XW60 rear door switches.

Confirm how a used Toyota was built before you buy.
Engine, transmission and packages decide which issues apply. The CarWhere Toyota build sheet reconstructs factory colors, options and packages from licensed VIN-level build data — availability is checked free, and it is $9.99 only when detailed build data is found for that VIN.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common Toyota problems?
They depend on the model and powertrain. Across the 15 Toyota models covered here, the most documented items are rear suspension tie rods can rust and fail (recall 16V596) on the RAV4; accelerator pedal can stick partly pressed (recall 10V017) on the Camry; frame can rust through on 2005–2010 trucks (class settlement) on the Tacoma. Each model page lists issues by generation with sources.
How do I check a Toyota for open recalls?
Enter the 17-character VIN on NHTSA’s recall lookup or Toyota’s owner site, or ask a Toyota dealer to run it. Recall repairs are free. CarWhere’s known-issues pages list major recall campaign numbers by model and generation.
Are known issues the same as years to avoid?
No. Known-issues pages explain specific, documented mechanical problems and recalls, and show raw NHTSA complaint counts by model year. Years-to-avoid research ranks model years against each other, so the two answer different questions and are linked from each model page where both exist.
