Toyota 3.5L V6 (2GR-FKS): years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The 2GR-FKS is Toyota's 3.5-liter V6 with D-4S direct and port injection and VVT-iW. It powered the 2016–2023 Tacoma at 278 hp, the 2017–2022 Highlander at 295 hp, the 2017–2020 Sienna at 296 hp and the 2018–2024 Camry at 301 hp. Toyota replaced it with turbo fours and hybrids.

The 2GR-FKS arrived in the 2016 Tacoma as a 3.5L Atkinson-capable V6 with D-4S, which combines direct and port fuel injection, and VVT-iW wide-range intake cam timing. For 2017 it replaced the older 3.5L in the Highlander and Sienna, adding 25 to 30 hp, and for 2018 it went into the redesigned Camry. Toyota's 2018 Camry release gives an 11.8:1 compression ratio and a 3.70 × 3.27 in bore and stroke.

Output differs by model: 278 hp and 265 lb-ft in the Tacoma, 295 hp and 263 lb-ft in the Highlander, 296 hp and 263 lb-ft in the Sienna and 301 hp and 267 lb-ft in the Camry. It left the lineup in stages: the Sienna went hybrid-only for 2021, the Highlander moved to the 2.4L turbo for 2023, the Tacoma for 2024 and the Camry went hybrid-only for 2025.

Frequently asked questions

Which Toyotas have the 2GR-FKS V6?

In the US: the 2016–2023 Tacoma, 2017–2022 Highlander, 2017–2020 Sienna and 2018–2024 Camry. Each later model year moved to a turbocharged four-cylinder or a hybrid.

Does the 2GR-FKS have direct injection?

Yes. It uses Toyota's D-4S system, which combines direct injection with port injection, plus VVT-iW intake cam timing that lets it run the Atkinson cycle for efficiency.

Why does the Tacoma V6 make less power than the Camry V6?

Toyota tunes the same 3.5L family differently by vehicle. The Tacoma is rated at 278 hp and 265 lb-ft, the Highlander at 295 hp, the Sienna at 296 hp and the Camry at 301 hp and 267 lb-ft at 6,600 and 4,700 rpm.

When did Toyota stop using the 3.5L V6?

The Sienna dropped it after 2020, the Highlander after 2022, the Tacoma after 2023 and the Camry after 2024. The replacements are the 2.4L turbo four (Highlander, Tacoma) and hybrid-only lineups (Sienna, Camry).
