Toyota i-FORCE MAX hybrid: years, specs & known problems
By CarWhere Research · Updated
i-FORCE MAX is Toyota's name for two different truck hybrids. The twin-turbo V6 version in the Tundra and Sequoia makes 437 hp and 583 lb-ft. The 2.4L turbo four-cylinder version in the 2024+ Tacoma, 2025+ 4Runner and 2024+ Land Cruiser makes 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. Both put an electric motor between the engine and transmission.
Toyota launched i-FORCE MAX in the 2022 Tundra, pairing the twin-turbo V6 with a motor generator and clutch in the bell housing between the engine and the 10-speed automatic, fed by a 288V sealed nickel-metal hydride battery under the rear seat. The 2023 Sequoia uses it as its only powertrain. Toyota rates both at 437 hp at 5,200 rpm and 583 lb-ft at 2,400 rpm.
The second i-FORCE MAX arrived with the 2024 Tacoma and also powers the 2024 Land Cruiser and the 2025 4Runner. It combines the turbocharged 2.4L four with a 48-hp electric motor inside an eight-speed automatic and a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery, for 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. Toyota covers hybrid components for 8 years/100,000 miles and the hybrid battery for 10 years/150,000 miles on these trucks. The gas-only V6 debris recalls do not include the hybrid.

Frequently asked questions
Is i-FORCE MAX a V6 or a four-cylinder?
Both, depending on the truck. Tundra and Sequoia use a twin-turbo V6 hybrid rated at 437 hp. The 2024+ Tacoma, 2024+ Land Cruiser and 2025+ 4Runner use a turbocharged 2.4L four-cylinder hybrid rated at 326 hp and 465 lb-ft.
How does i-FORCE MAX work?
An electric motor sits between the gasoline engine and the automatic transmission. In the Tundra it is a motor generator with a clutch in the bell housing, ahead of a 10-speed automatic; in the 2.4L trucks a 48-hp motor is built into the eight-speed transmission. Both use nickel-metal hydride batteries.
Is the i-FORCE MAX included in the Tundra engine debris recall?
No. Toyota's November 2025 recall covers conventional gas models only, and the May 2026 recall covers 2024 Tundra non-hybrid vehicles.
What is the hybrid warranty on i-FORCE MAX trucks?
Toyota covers hybrid-related components for 8 years/100,000 miles and the hybrid battery for 10 years/150,000 miles, transferable across owners, on top of the 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Does the Sequoia come without i-FORCE MAX?
No. Since the 2023 redesign the Sequoia has been sold only with the twin-turbo V6 i-FORCE MAX hybrid, rated at 437 hp and 583 lb-ft.
