Toyota Prius problems and known issues

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The most-documented Toyota Prius problem is the third-generation inverter: the Intelligent Power Module can fail and stall 2010–2015 Prius and 2012–2017 Prius v hybrids, leading to recalls 14V053, 15V449, 18V684 and 20V369 and a court-approved warranty extension to 20 years. Other recalls cover XW20 water pumps and steering shafts and XW60 rear door switches.

CarWhere lists 10 documented Prius issues, including 9 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, powertrains, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common Toyota Prius problem?

On the 2010–2015 third-generation Prius and 2012–2017 Prius v, it is inverter failure: the Intelligent Power Module can be damaged by heat or voltage and cause limp mode or a stall. Toyota addressed it with recalls 14V053, 15V449, 18V684 and 20V369, and a class settlement extended inverter coverage to 20 years.

Which Prius years have inverter problems?

The IPM recalls cover 2010–2015 Prius and 2012–2017 Prius v cars. 18V684 included 2010–2014 Prius and 2012–2014 Prius v; 20V369 added 2013–2015 Prius and 2014–2017 Prius v cars not in 18V684.

Is the Prius inverter covered for 20 years?

A class settlement given final court approval in February 2023 provided an inverter warranty extension to 20 years plus a $20 million fund, according to Bloomberg Law. A Toyota dealer can confirm by VIN whether a specific car is covered.

Does the 2023+ Prius have problems?

The main documented issue on the fifth-generation Prius is the rear door switch: water can short it and let an unlocked rear door open. Recall 26V049 expanded and replaced 24V274 and covers 2023–2026 Prius and Prius Plug-in Hybrid models.

What should I check on a used 2010–2015 Prius?

Confirm by VIN that 14V053, 18V684 and, where applicable, 20V369 are complete; scan the hybrid system for inverter fault codes; and ask for records of any past inverter replacement. Curtain-airbag recall 16V487 also applies to 2010–2012 cars.
