Mercedes Model Names Explained
Mercedes names start from four car letters: A, C, E, S, smallest to largest. SUVs add GL (GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS) and coupe-styled cars add CL (CLA, CLE). The number after the letters is an output tier, not engine size. AMG marks performance models, Maybach the most luxurious, EQ or “Electric” the EVs, and 4MATIC means all-wheel drive.

How to read a Mercedes name
Take Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ Coupe: the sub-brand (Mercedes-AMG), the class (GLC — an SUV positioned with the C-Class), the output tier (53), the drive system (4MATIC+, AMG all-wheel drive) and the body (Coupe — the sloped-roof version of the SUV). A plain GLC 300 is the same class with the standard engine and rear-wheel drive; GLC 350e adds a lowercase e for plug-in hybrid.
| Part | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Sub-brand | Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach | Performance (AMG) or ultra-luxury (Maybach) version |
| Class letters | C, GLC, CLE | Size and body family; GL = SUV, CL = coupe-styled |
| Number | 300, 450, 580; AMG 35–63 | Output tier within the class, not displacement |
| Lowercase e | GLC 350e | Plug-in hybrid |
| 4MATIC / 4MATIC+ | C 300 4MATIC | All-wheel drive (+ = AMG Performance 4MATIC+) |
| Electric / EQ | GLC 400 4MATIC Electric, EQS | Battery-electric model |
| Body word | Coupe, Cabriolet, Wagon, All-Terrain | Body style when a class has more than one |

Mercedes SUVs: GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS and G
In November 2014 Mercedes renamed its SUVs so each one points to a car class: the GLK became the GLC, the M-Class became the GLE and the GL became the GLS. The G-Class kept its name. Read the last letter and you know roughly where the SUV sits — see Mercedes GLC vs GLE for the most-compared pair.
| SUV | Paired with | Notes (starting MSRP, USD) |
|---|---|---|
| GLA | A-Class | Smallest Mercedes SUV |
| GLB | B-Class | GLB 250 $43,800; AMG GLB 35 $60,600 |

AMG 35, 43, 53, 63 — and Maybach
AMG models put the AMG sub-brand in front and a two-digit tier after the class: AMG CLA 35, AMG C 43, AMG E 53 HYBRID, AMG G 63. Higher is more powerful, and an S (AMG GLE 63 S) marks the stronger version of a tier. The number no longer tracks engine size: the 2026 AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder plug-in hybrid rated at 671 hp. The full story of the three letters is in what AMG stands for. AMG Line, by contrast, is only an appearance package on a regular model.
Mercedes-Maybach is the luxury sub-brand above the S-Class. The US lineup lists the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4MATIC ($210,200), S 680 4MATIC ($247,450), GLS 680 ($185,000) and EQS 680 SUV ($180,000).
EQ and “Electric”: electric Mercedes names
Mercedes' first dedicated EVs took EQ names — EQB, EQE and EQS, each tied to a class letter, and all still on the US lineup. Mercedes has since said new electric models will no longer use EQ in the model name; instead they carry the regular class name, marketed “with EQ Technology.” On mbusa.com they appear as, for example, the G 580 Electric, GLC 400 4MATIC Electric and CLA 250+ ELECTRIC.
What is 4MATIC? Mercedes all-wheel drive explained
4MATIC is Mercedes-Benz's name for all-wheel drive. Without it, most Mercedes cars and the smaller SUVs are rear- or front-wheel drive depending on the platform; every GLE and GLS on the current US lineup is listed with it. AMG models with the strongest engines use AMG Performance 4MATIC+, a variable system tuned for handling.
| When | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1985 | 4MATIC shown at the Frankfurt IAA motor show |
| 1987 | Production begins on the W124 E-Class: automatically engaging all-wheel drive |
| 1997 | Second generation on the W210 E-Class: permanent all-wheel drive |
| 2016 | 4MATIC+ introduced on AMG models: variable all-wheel drive whose front axle can be disconnected on some models |
| Today | Sold as 4MATIC Permanent All-Wheel Drive, 4MATIC Variable All-Wheel Drive, and AMG Performance 4MATIC+ |
4MATIC usually adds a few thousand dollars on cars where it is optional — $2,000 on the C 300 Sedan ($49,650 vs $51,650 for the C 300 4MATIC) and $2,500 on the E 350 ($65,200 vs $67,700) on mbusa.com. On a used car, the badge alone is not proof: check the Mercedes data card by VIN or the Mercedes VIN decoder for the drive type the car was built with.
Names tell you the model — the data card tells you the car
Two cars with the same name can be equipped very differently: AMG Line or not, Night Package, Burmester audio, air suspension, driver-assistance packages. Those are recorded as three-digit codes on the factory data card; see Mercedes option codes and the Mercedes-Benz build sheet for what each covers, or the Mercedes chassis codes (W206, W214, X254…) for generations.

FAQ
What do the Mercedes letters A, C, E and S mean?
They are the size and price ladder of Mercedes cars: A is the smallest, then C (compact executive), E (mid-size) and S (full-size flagship). The SUV and coupe names borrow these letters to show which car they are positioned against — the GLC sits alongside the C-Class, the GLE alongside the E-Class, the GLS alongside the S-Class.
What is the difference between GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE and GLS?
All five are Mercedes SUVs, smallest to largest. GL marks an SUV and the last letter ties it to a car class: GLA (A), GLB (B), GLC (C), GLE (E) and GLS (S). The current names date from Mercedes’ 2014 renaming, when the GLK became the GLC, the M-Class became the GLE and the GL became the GLS.
What does 4MATIC mean on a Mercedes?
4MATIC is Mercedes-Benz’s name for all-wheel drive. It debuted at the 1985 Frankfurt motor show and went into production on the W124 E-Class in 1987. Current systems are sold as 4MATIC (permanent or variable all-wheel drive) and, on AMG models, AMG Performance 4MATIC+.
What do the numbers like 300, 450 and 580 mean?
They indicate an output tier within a class, not the engine size. On the current C-Class, for example, the C 300 is rated at 255 hp and uses a four-cylinder engine with 48-volt hybrid assist. A higher number means more power within that model line.
Does Mercedes still use the EQ name?
For existing electric models, yes — the EQB, EQE and EQS are still listed. Mercedes has said new electric models will no longer use EQ as a model name; new electric versions carry the traditional class name, such as the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric and the G 580 Electric on mbusa.com.
What is the difference between Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach?
Both are sub-brands. Mercedes-AMG builds the performance models (AMG C 43, AMG G 63). Mercedes-Maybach builds the most luxurious versions of the S-Class, GLS and EQS SUV — the Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC starts at $247,450 on mbusa.com.
