Mercedes Certified Pre-Owned: What the Program Covers

A Mercedes-Benz certified pre-owned car is six model years old or newer, has under 75,000 miles, passes a 165+ point inspection and road test, and adds a 12-month, unlimited-mile CPO Limited Warranty after the original 4-year/50,000-mile coverage ends. It also includes Roadside Assistance, trip-interruption cover and a 7-day/500-mile exchange.

How the warranty timeline works

The CPO warranty stacks on top of what's left of the factory warranty. A three-year-old car with 30,000 miles still has about a year and 20,000 miles of the 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty; when that runs out — by time or by miles — the 12-month CPO Limited Warranty starts, with no mileage cap. A six-year-old car has no factory coverage left, so the CPO year starts at purchase. Mercedes-Benz lists the covered systems as engine, powertrain, EV battery state of health, suspension, brakes (excluding normal wear of discs and pads), steering, electrical, climate control, audio/navigation, central locking and convertible tops.

Whether the certified car is the better buy comes down to its price gap against an equivalent non-certified car. The general trade-offs are in is certified pre-owned worth it, and CarWhere's CPO price premium research tracks how much more certified cars list for. If the car you want is outside CPO limits, a Mercedes pre-purchase inspection covers much of the same ground.

Check the factory options before you buy

Certification checks condition and service — not whether the car was built with the packages in the listing. Two CPO GLEs or C-Classes with the same badge can differ by the AMG Line, Driver Assistance Package, Burmester audio or air suspension, and listing descriptions are often copied from trim brochures. The Mercedes-Benz data card by VIN lists the factory option codes for that exact car, so you know what the certified price is buying. Also confirm the service history matches the Mercedes Service A and B schedule.

FAQ

What are the requirements for Mercedes certified pre-owned?

Mercedes-Benz USA says a CPO car must be six model years old or newer with fewer than 75,000 miles, serviced on schedule, come with a vehicle history report, pass a 165+ point inspection and road test (internal-combustion models), and have all open recalls and due services completed.

How long is the Mercedes CPO warranty?

The car keeps whatever remains of the 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty, then the CPO Limited Warranty adds 12 more months with unlimited miles. A CPO Extended Limited Warranty can add one or two more years, also with unlimited miles.

What does the Mercedes CPO warranty cover?

Mercedes-Benz lists defects in material or workmanship in the engine, powertrain, EV battery state of health, suspension, brakes (not normal wear of discs and pads), steering, electrical, climate control, audio/navigation, central locking and convertible tops where fitted. It also includes 24/7 Roadside Assistance and trip-interruption reimbursement.

Is a Mercedes certified pre-owned worth it?

It is worth it when the price premium over a comparable non-certified car is smaller than what you value the extra warranty year, the inspection and the exchange window at. Compare the same model, year and mileage both ways, and make sure the certified car really has the options you are paying for.

Does Mercedes CPO certification confirm the car’s options?

No. Certification covers condition, service and warranty, not whether a listing’s option list is accurate. The car’s factory equipment is recorded by VIN; a Mercedes-Benz data card shows the option codes the car was built with.
