Mercedes Service A vs Service B

Mercedes Service A is the first visit at about 10,000 miles or one year: oil and filter, fluid checks, tire pressure, brake inspection and a counter reset. Service B, due about 20,000 miles or a year later, adds a cabin dust/combination filter and a brake fluid exchange. After that the two alternate, roughly once a year or every 10,000 miles.

When each service is due

Mercedes-Benz USA gives Service A at about 10,000 miles or 1 year (whichever comes first), then Service B at about 20,000 miles or 1 year after the previous service, each repeating about every 20,000 miles or 2 years. In practice that is one alternating visit a year for a car driven about 10,000 miles annually. The car's own maintenance display shows which service is next and when.

What affects the cost of Service A and B

  • The dealer. Mercedes-Benz USA publishes no national price list; each dealer sets labor rates and service-menu prices.
  • Model and engine. Oil capacity, filter type and the booklet's extra items vary by engine — an AMG V8 and a four-cylinder GLA are not the same job.
  • Add-on items at that mileage. The booklet can schedule spark plugs, air filters, transmission or coolant service at specific intervals, and those are billed on top of A or B.
  • Prepaid plans. Mercedes-Benz Prepaid Maintenance covers routine maintenance every 1 year or 10,000 miles in 2-, 3- or 4-year packages for new cars and 2- or 3-year plans for pre-owned cars up to 8 model years old with under 80,000 miles. Mercedes-Benz says the plan is transferable in a private sale.
  • EVs. All-electric Mercedes-Benz models skip oil service; Mercedes-Benz USA lists a separate EV service package (dust and charcoal filters, brake fluid, wiper blades, multi-point inspection).

Are Mercedes expensive to maintain?

Somewhat more than the average car. RepairPal's published figures for Mercedes-Benz, based on 2010–2019 model-year vehicles, put the average annual repair cost about 39% above the all-model average, with more unscheduled shop visits per year. The figures below cover repairs; scheduled Service A and B visits are on top.

Buying used? Check the service history and the build

On a used Mercedes, the A/B record shows whether the car was kept on schedule — an unbroken alternating history is the pattern to look for, and it is a condition of Mercedes certified pre-owned eligibility. The other half is the equipment: the Mercedes-Benz data card by VIN shows the factory option codes, so you know whether the car really has the AMG Line, air suspension or driver-assistance package in the listing.

FAQ

What is the difference between Mercedes Service A and Service B?

Service A is the basic visit: oil and filter replacement, fluid level checks, tire inflation check, brake component inspection and a maintenance-counter reset. Service B includes all of that plus a cabin dust/combination filter replacement and a brake fluid exchange.

How often is Mercedes Service A and B?

Mercedes-Benz USA lists Service A first at about 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first, and Service B about 20,000 miles or 1 year after the previous service. The two then alternate, so most cars see one visit a year or every 10,000 miles.

How much does Mercedes Service B cost?

Mercedes-Benz USA does not publish a national price; dealers set their own, and the total depends on the model, engine, oil capacity and any extra items the maintenance booklet calls for at that mileage. Ask for a written quote that lists each item, or lock the cost in with a Mercedes-Benz Prepaid Maintenance plan.

Are Mercedes expensive to maintain?

More than average. RepairPal puts the average annual repair cost for a Mercedes-Benz at $908 versus $652 across all models, with 0.7 unscheduled shop visits a year versus 0.4, based on 2010–2019 model-year vehicles.

Can I skip Mercedes Service B?

Skipping it means the brake fluid and cabin filter go unchanged and the car falls off its maintenance schedule. A documented on-schedule history is also a requirement for Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned eligibility and something used buyers check.
