Tesla Model Y generations and updates
| Generation / update | Years | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Original Model Y | 2020–2025 model years | Production and deliveries began in Q1 2020. Built on the Model 3 platform, it offered seating for up to seven. EPA ranges ran from 244 mi (2021–2022 RWD) to 337 mi (2025 Long Range RWD).[16][13][7][11] |
| New Model Y (searched as "Juniper") | Launched 2025 (2026 model year listings onward) | Tesla switched its production lines to the New Model Y in Q1 2025. The Long Range RWD (357 mi), Performance, Standard and Model Y L followed. Because the model year printed on an early new-design car depends on its build date, decode the VIN to confirm.[17][4][1][2] |
What the Model Y "Juniper" changed
Tesla calls it the New Model Y; "Juniper" is the name many buyers search for, and Tesla does not use it in its filings. Tesla's Q1 2025 update said switching production lines to the New Model Y cost several weeks of output.
Tesla then widened the range of versions. A Long Range RWD with 357 miles of range arrived in May 2025, and the Performance and the lower-priced Standard ($39,990 starting price) followed in Q3 2025. fueleconomy.gov rates the 2026 Long Range AWD at 327 miles, up from 311 for the 2025 listing.[17][4][1][11][2]
Model Y Performance: 0–60 and range
Tesla's Q3 2025 shareholder update announced the new Model Y Performance and quoted a 0–60 mph time of 3.3 seconds. fueleconomy.gov rates the 2026 and 2027 Model Y Performance AWD at 306 miles and 105 MPGe combined.
Earlier Performance models were rated 315 miles (2020), 303 miles (2021–2023), 279 miles (2024) and 277 miles (2025). The 2020 car on optional 21-inch wheels was rated 291 miles. Tesla does not publish horsepower in any filing we could open.[1][6][7][10][11][2][3]
Model Y 7-seater and the six-seat Model Y L
Tesla's annual reports describe the Model Y as a compact SUV with "seating for up to seven adults," meaning an optional third row. In 2025 Tesla added the Model Y L, a longer-wheelbase version with six seats in three rows. It launched in China in Q3 2025 and in the US in July 2026.
fueleconomy.gov rates the 2027 Model Y L (20-inch wheels) at 328 miles and 114 MPGe combined. Tesla's published cargo and seat dimensions are on tesla.com, which we could not open, so they are not shown.[12][1][5][3]
Which Model Y has the most range
Charging, Superchargers and towing
The Model Y uses Tesla's connector, which Tesla opened as the North American Charging Standard in November 2022 and SAE standardized as J3400. Tesla reported 8,904 Supercharger stations worldwide at the end of Q3 2026.
Tesla publishes the Model Y tow rating on tesla.com, which we could not open for this page; see CarWhere's Model Y towing-capacity page for that figure.[13][14][15]
Used Model Y: recall checks
Most Model Y recalls were fixed over the air. Recalls that need a service visit include 23V385000 (loose steering-wheel fastener on some 2022–2023 cars), 25V690000 (battery contactors on some 2026 cars) and 26V315000 (missing certification label on some 2025–2026 cars). Check the VIN at NHTSA before buying.[18][19][20]
