Toyota 2.0L Dynamic Force four (M20A-FKS / M20A-FXS): years, specs & known problems
By CarWhere Research · Updated
The M20A is Toyota's 1,986 cc Dynamic Force four-cylinder. The gas M20A-FKS arrived in the 2019 Corolla Hatchback and makes 169 hp and 151 lb-ft in the Corolla; the Corolla Cross version makes 169 hp. The hybrid M20A-FXS powers the 2023+ Prius at 194–196 system hp and the Corolla Cross Hybrid at 196 hp.
Toyota announced the 2.0L Dynamic Force Engine in February 2018 alongside the Direct Shift-CVT with a launch gear. It shares its design approach with the 2.5L A25A: a long stroke of about 1.2 times the bore (80.5 × 97.6 mm), D-4S direct and port injection, a 13:1 compression ratio for the gas version and 14:1 for the hybrid, and Toyota-rated thermal efficiency of 40 and 41 percent.
In the US the gas M20A-FKS debuted in the 2019 Corolla Hatchback, then went into the 2020 Corolla SE and XSE and the 2022 Corolla Cross. For 2023 it became the engine in all gas Corolla sedans, replacing the 1.8L. The hybrid M20A-FXS powers the 2023+ Prius and the Corolla Cross Hybrid with the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System.
