Toyota Camry problems and known issues

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The most-documented Toyota Camry problems are the 2007–2010 accelerator pedal recalls, power window switches that can overheat on 2007–2009 cars, a clogged A/C drain that can short the airbag module on 2012–2013 cars, vacuum pump and fuel pump failures on 2018–2020 cars, and inverter and instrument-display recalls on the 2025–2026 hybrid-only Camry.

CarWhere lists 9 documented Camry issues, including 9 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, powertrains, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source.

Inside the pedal sensor assembly, the friction lever can wear smooth; with condensation it can make the accelerator hard to press, slow to return or, at worst, stuck partly down. Dealers install a reinforcement bar in the pedal. A separate recall, 09V388, modified pedals and floor shapes on many 2004–2010 Toyotas to stop floor-mat entrapment.

Symptoms

  • Accelerator feels sticky or slow to return
  • Engine speed hangs up after lifting off the pedal

Frequently asked questions

Was the Toyota Camry part of the sticking-pedal recall?

Yes. Recall 10V017 covered 2007–2010 Camrys for a pedal that could become hard to press, slow to return or stuck partly down; dealers fit a reinforcement bar. Floor-mat entrapment recall 09V388 also covered Camrys.

Do 2018–2019 Camrys have brake problems?

Recall 21V890 covers some 2018–2019 Camrys whose brake vacuum pump can fail when an internal vane cap breaks, causing a sudden loss of braking assist. Dealers repair or replace the pump free of charge.

Does the Camry have a fuel pump recall?

Yes. Recall 20V682 covers 2018–2020 Camrys among many Toyota and Lexus models whose low-pressure fuel pump can fail and stall the engine. Recall 25V028 later added more 2018 Camrys.

Are there recalls on the new 2025–2026 Camry hybrid?

Two notable ones: 25V869 replaces the inverter on some 2025–2026 Camry Hybrids because an internal bolt can loosen, and 26V511 updates software for an instrument display that can go blank at startup.

How do I check a used Camry for open recalls?

Enter the 17-digit VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup or Toyota’s recall site, or ask a Toyota dealer. Recall work is free regardless of mileage or owner.
