Porsche 911 Trim Levels Explained

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Porsche 911 range climbs from the rear-drive Carrera through the lighter Carrera T, the more powerful Carrera S, all-wheel-drive 4 and 4S versions, the Targa, the GTS, the Turbo and Turbo S, and the naturally aspirated GT3 family. On the current 992.2, launch prices run from $120,100 for a Carrera Coupe to $284,300 for the Turbo S Cabriolet.

What each 911 trim adds

  1. 1. Carrera379–388 hp

The entry 911: rear-wheel drive and the 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six (379 hp on the 992.1, 388 hp on the 992.2). On the 992.2, Sport Chrono and the sport exhaust are options, not standard.[1]

  2. 2. Carrera T379–388 hp

A lighter, driver-focused Carrera with the base engine. The 992.2 Carrera T is manual-only and the lightest 992.2 Carrera; the 992.1 version deleted the rear seats and some sound deadening.[2]

  3. 3. Carrera S443–473 hp

More power (443 hp on the 992.1, 473 hp on the 992.2). The 992.2 Carrera S also gets the previous Carrera GTS brakes (408 mm front, 380 mm rear), staggered 20/21-inch wheels and the sport exhaust as standard; PASM Sport suspension, ceramic brakes and rear-axle steering remain options.[3]

  4. 4. Carrera 4 / Carrera 4S379–473 hp

All-wheel-drive versions of the Carrera and Carrera S with the same engines. The 992.2 Carrera 4S arrived for the 2026 model year.

  5. 5. Targa 4 / 4S / 4 GTS379–532 hp

The Targa body, with its roll hoop and opening roof section. Every 992 Targa is all-wheel drive.

  6. 6. Carrera GTS473–532 hp

On the 992.2 the GTS is the first 911 with the T-Hybrid powertrain: a 3.6-liter flat-six with an electric turbocharger and 532 hp system output. Rear-axle steering, a GTS-specific sport exhaust and a PASM sport suspension 10 mm lower than the Carrera are standard. The 992.1 GTS used a 473 hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo.[1]

  7. 7. Turbo / Turbo S572–701 hp

The top of the regular range, always all-wheel drive. The 992.1 Turbo made 572 hp and the Turbo S 640 hp from a 3.7-liter twin-turbo; the 2026 Turbo S switched to a T-Hybrid with two electric turbochargers and 701 hp.[4]

  8. 8. GT3 / GT3 Touring / GT3 RS502–518 hp

Motorsport-department cars with a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six (502 hp; 518 hp in the RS) and rear-wheel drive. The Touring replaces the fixed rear wing with an extending spoiler.[5]

  9. 9. Limited and special editions473–543 hp

Low-volume 992.1 models: the S/T (1,963 built), Sport Classic (1,250), Dakar (2,500) and Edition 50 Years Porsche Design (750). Their factory specification matters more than for any regular trim.

911 options that matter when you shop

Porsche sells most equipment as individual options, so the trim badge only tells you part of the story. These are the options worth confirming on any 911 you look at.

  • Sport Chrono Package: Optional on the Carrera. It adds the drive-mode switch and launch control and is one of the most searched-for 911 options on used cars.
  • Rear-axle steering: Optional on the Carrera S; standard on the 992.2 GTS.
  • PASM Sport suspension: Lowered, firmer adaptive suspension; optional on the Carrera S and built into the GTS.
  • Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB): Expensive when new and easy to confirm by VIN; replacement rotors are costly, so know whether the car has them.
  • Paint to Sample: Custom colors carry a premium on the used market.
  • Manual vs PDK: Manual availability changes by trim and year (for example, the 992.2 Carrera S was PDK-only until a manual returned for 2027).

Which 911 trim should you buy?

If you want the classic 911 experience at the lowest price, the Carrera is the starting point. The Carrera S is the step most buyers take for more power, and on the 992.2 it now includes bigger brakes and the sport exhaust. The GTS packages the performance options as standard, the Turbo S is the fastest everyday 911, and the GT3 family is for track-focused buyers.

On the current 992.2, launch prices run from $120,100 (Carrera, 2025) to $284,300 (Turbo S, 2026). To see what is for sale now, browse used Porsche 911 listings.

Before you buy a used 911, check that exact car

Badges can be swapped and Porsche options are chosen car by car. The build sheet decodes the VIN into the factory trim, colors and recorded options — and original MSRP when the build data includes it. Free availability check first; $9.99 only if detailed build data exists.

Frequently asked questions

How many Porsche 911 trims are there?

The 992.2 lineup in CarWhere's specs data has 19 US trim and body combinations, from the Carrera Coupe to the Turbo S Cabriolet and GT3 models. The 992.1 had 27, including limited models such as the S/T, Sport Classic and Dakar.

What is the difference between the 911 Carrera, Carrera S and GTS?

On the 992.2, the Carrera makes 388 hp, the Carrera S 473 hp and the GTS 532 hp from its T-Hybrid powertrain. The S adds bigger brakes and a sport exhaust; the GTS adds rear-axle steering and a lowered sport suspension as standard. Launch prices were $120,100, $146,400 and $164,900 for the coupes.

What is the cheapest Porsche 911 trim?

The Carrera Coupe. It launched at $97,400 for the 2020 992.1 and $120,100 for the 2025 992.2, before options and Porsche's delivery fee.

What does the 4 mean in Carrera 4S?

The 4 means all-wheel drive. A Carrera 4S has the Carrera S engine with all-wheel drive; a Carrera S is rear-wheel drive.

How do I confirm which 911 trim and options a used car has?

Check the VIN. Badges can be swapped and options are chosen car by car, so a Porsche build sheet by VIN shows the factory trim, colors and recorded options, and original MSRP when the build data includes it.
