Toyota 2.5L Dynamic Force four (A25A-FKS / A25A-FXS): years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The A25A is Toyota's 2,487 cc Dynamic Force four-cylinder, first used in the 2018 Camry. The gas A25A-FKS makes 203–206 hp in the Camry and RAV4. The hybrid A25A-FXS runs a 14:1 compression ratio and anchors Toyota's 2.5L hybrids, from 208 system hp in the 2018 Camry Hybrid to 245 hp in the Sienna.

Toyota announced the 2.5L Dynamic Force Engine in December 2016 as the first of its TNGA engines. It has an 87.5 × 103.4 mm bore and stroke (a long stroke of about 1.2 times the bore), D-4S direct and port injection, laser-clad valve seats and electric VVT-iE intake cam timing. Toyota rated thermal efficiency at 40 percent for the gasoline version and 41 percent for the hybrid version, which uses a 14:1 compression ratio instead of 13:1.

The gas A25A-FKS debuted in the 2018 Camry with an eight-speed automatic and went into the 2019 RAV4 at 203 hp. The hybrid A25A-FXS powers the Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Sienna, Grand Highlander and Crown hybrids, with system outputs from 208 to 245 hp, and the fifth-generation hybrid in the 2025 Camry and 2026 RAV4.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the A25A-FKS and A25A-FXS?

The FKS is the gasoline version used in non-hybrid Camry and RAV4 models, with a 13:1 compression ratio. The FXS is the hybrid version with a 14:1 compression ratio and Atkinson-cycle operation. Toyota rates their peak thermal efficiency at 40 and 41 percent.

How much horsepower does the Toyota 2.5 make?

The gas version makes 203 hp and 184 lb-ft in most Camry and RAV4 models (206 hp in the Camry XSE). Hybrid system output ranges from 208 hp in the 2021 Camry Hybrid to 245 hp in the Sienna and Grand Highlander Hybrid.

Does the Toyota 2.5 Dynamic Force engine have direct injection?

Yes. It uses D-4S, which combines high-pressure direct injectors with port injectors and switches between them depending on driving conditions.

Which Toyota hybrids use the 2.5L engine?

The Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, Sienna, Grand Highlander Hybrid and Crown XLE and Limited. The 2025 Camry and 2026 RAV4 pair it with the fifth-generation hybrid system.
