Which Ford Blue Advantage level is worth paying for?

  • Gold Certified — the meaningful one. On a 3- to 5-year-old F-150, Explorer or Bronco the 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage extends well past Ford's original 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
  • EV Certified — for a used Mustang Mach-E or F-150 Lightning; the high-voltage battery keeps its original Ford battery coverage, which is usually the bigger concern.
  • Blue Certified — mostly an inspection plus a short warranty. A 90-day/4,000-mile term covers early surprises, not long-term ownership.

Certified cars list for more than comparable non-certified ones; how much more varies by brand and model. See CarWhere's CPO premium research and is certified pre-owned worth it? for how to judge the premium.

What certification does not tell you

A Ford certification confirms condition at inspection and adds coverage. It does not list how the truck or SUV was originally ordered — which equipment group, engine, axle ratio or tow package it has — and two certified F-150s at the same price can be very differently equipped. Model-year track records still matter, too: check F-150 years to avoid, Explorer years to avoid and the Ford reliability overview before choosing a year.

Looking at a certified Ford? Check how it was optioned

Certification covers condition and warranty, not equipment. Check the exact factory options and packages of the Ford you are looking at before you buy — engine, tow package, equipment group. FAQ

What is Ford Blue Advantage?

Ford Blue Advantage is Ford’s certified pre-owned program, sold through Ford dealers. It has three levels: Gold Certified for newer Fords, EV Certified for electric Fords, and Blue Certified for older or higher-mileage vehicles of any make. Each requires a Ford inspection and adds Ford-backed warranty coverage, roadside assistance and a 14-day/1,000-mile money-back guarantee.

What is the difference between Ford Gold Certified and Blue Certified?

Gold Certified is limited to Ford models up to 6 years old with under 80,000 miles that pass a 172-point inspection, and it adds a 12-month/12,000-mile comprehensive warranty and a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Blue Certified accepts any make up to 10 years old with under 150,000 miles, uses a 139-point inspection and carries a 90-day/4,000-mile comprehensive warranty.

Can a non-Ford be Ford Blue Certified?

Yes. Ford says Blue Certified covers “any make and model up to 10 years old with less than 150,000 miles” that passes its 139-point inspection, so a Ford dealer can certify a used Toyota or Chevrolet at the Blue level. Gold and EV Certified are Ford-only.

Does Ford Blue Advantage include a money-back guarantee?

Yes. Ford lists a 14-day/1,000-mile (whichever comes first) money-back guarantee on Gold, EV and Blue Certified vehicles, handled through the selling Ford dealer. Read the dealer’s paperwork for the exact return conditions.

Is Ford Blue Advantage worth it?

Gold Certified usually is on a late-model Ford you plan to keep, because the 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage is the main value. Blue Certified’s 90-day warranty is short, so weigh the premium against an independent pre-purchase inspection and an extended warranty you choose yourself.
