ABS Light: What It Means and What to Do
The ABS Light means the anti-lock brake system has detected a fault and turned itself off, so the wheels can lock up during hard braking.
- What it looks like
- The letters ABS inside a circle, sometimes with curved brackets on either side.
- Color
- Amber/yellow. On some vehicles it is shown together with the red brake warning light when the fault also affects brake force distribution.
Also called: anti-lock brake light, ABS warning light, anti-lock braking system light, ABS in a circle light

Why the abs light comes on
The ABS module reads wheel-speed sensors at each wheel and pulses brake pressure when a wheel starts to lock, letting you keep steering control during hard stops. It runs a self-check at startup and continuously while driving. If a sensor signal drops out, the pump or valves fail, or voltage is wrong, it stores a fault and disables anti-lock function, which often disables traction and stability control as well.
Common causes
- Failed or contaminated wheel-speed sensor
- Damaged sensor wiring or connector near a wheel
- Cracked or rusted tone ring on an axle or hub
- Low brake fluid level
- Blown ABS fuse or relay
- ABS module or hydraulic pump failure
- Low battery or charging-system voltage
What to do when the abs light comes on
- Check whether the red brake warning light is also on and whether the brake pedal feels normal; if not, stop driving and arrange a tow.
- Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir with the engine off.
- Restart the vehicle; a temporary signal dropout may clear, but a persistent light needs diagnosis.
- Leave extra following distance and brake earlier, especially in rain or snow.
- Have the ABS codes read with a scanner that can access the ABS module, since a basic engine-code reader often cannot.
- Inspect wheel-speed sensors and wiring at the wheel indicated by the code.
Symbols and colors vary by manufacturer; your owner’s manual has the exact meaning for your vehicle.

ABS Light FAQ
What does the abs light mean?
The ABS Light means the anti-lock brake system has detected a fault and turned itself off, so the wheels can lock up during hard braking.
Can I keep driving with the abs light on?
With only the ABS light on, normal braking usually still works, but the wheels can lock and skid in a panic stop, so drive carefully and have it checked soon. If the ABS light and the red brake warning light are on together, have the car towed or inspected before driving.
Will my car pass inspection with the ABS light on?
In many states, a lit ABS light is a safety-inspection failure on vehicles that came with ABS. Check your local inspection rules.
Can low brake fluid turn on the ABS light?
On some vehicles, yes, though low fluid more commonly turns on the red brake light. Low fluid also usually means worn pads or a leak, so find the reason rather than only topping it off.
Why does my ABS light come on and off?
Intermittent lights usually point to a sensor with a weak signal, a loose connector, or wiring that breaks contact over bumps or in wet weather. The module stores the fault, so a scan can identify which wheel.
