Airbag Light: What It Means and What to Do

The Airbag Light means the supplemental restraint system has found a fault, and one or more airbags or seat belt pretensioners may not deploy in a crash.

Get it checked soon
Can I keep driving? The car will drive normally, but airbags may not deploy in a crash, so it is not safe to assume you are protected. Have it diagnosed promptly, and avoid placing a child in the front seat until it is repaired.
What it looks like
A side view of a seated person wearing a seat belt with a large circle in front of the chest, or the letters SRS or AIRBAG.
Color
Red on most vehicles; some use amber. It should light briefly at startup and then go out.

Why the airbag light comes on

The airbag control module monitors crash sensors, airbag inflator circuits, seat belt buckle switches and pretensioners, and on many vehicles the passenger occupant-classification sensor. At startup it tests each circuit; if resistance or communication is out of range, it stores a fault and keeps the light on. Depending on the fault, it may disable only one airbag or the entire system.

Steady vs flashing

A steady light means a fault is stored. On some vehicles the light flashes for a period at startup and then stays on, which is a way of signaling a stored or critical fault; refer to the owner's manual for the specific pattern.

Common causes

  1. Worn clockspring (spiral cable) behind the steering wheel
  2. Loose or corroded connector under a front seat, often after seat removal or cleaning
  3. Faulty seat belt buckle switch or pretensioner
  4. Passenger occupant-classification sensor fault
  5. Previous crash with deployed airbags or a module that was not reset
  6. Low battery voltage during starting
  7. Water damage to wiring or the control module

What to do when the airbag light comes on

  1. Do not attempt to disassemble airbag components yourself; they can deploy and cause injury.
  2. Note whether the light came on after any seat, steering wheel, or interior work and check for unplugged connectors under the seats with the ignition off.
  3. Seat children in the rear and avoid relying on the front airbags until it is fixed.
  4. Have the SRS module codes read with a scanner that supports restraint systems.
  5. Check for open safety recalls on airbags and related parts using the vehicle's VIN.
  6. After repairs, confirm the light goes out after the startup bulb check.

Symbols and colors vary by manufacturer; your owner’s manual has the exact meaning for your vehicle.

Airbag Light FAQ

What does the airbag light mean?

The Airbag Light means the supplemental restraint system has found a fault, and one or more airbags or seat belt pretensioners may not deploy in a crash.

Can I keep driving with the airbag light on?

The car will drive normally, but airbags may not deploy in a crash, so it is not safe to assume you are protected. Have it diagnosed promptly, and avoid placing a child in the front seat until it is repaired.

Can I still drive with the airbag light on?

The vehicle will operate, but the airbag system may be partly or fully disabled, so your protection in a crash is reduced. It should be repaired promptly.

Why did my airbag light come on after I moved the seat?

Front seats often have airbag, pretensioner, and occupant-sensor connectors underneath. Sliding the seat or cleaning under it can loosen a connector, which sets a fault that usually must be cleared with a scanner after reconnecting.

Will the airbag light go off by itself?

Usually not. Most SRS faults are latched and stay stored until the problem is repaired and the code is cleared with a scan tool.
