Forward Collision Warning Light: What It Means and What to Do
The Forward Collision Warning Light alerts you to an imminent risk of hitting a vehicle ahead, or, when steady amber, shows that the collision warning or automatic braking system is unavailable.
- What it looks like
- Two cars, one behind the other, with a star burst or lines between them, or text such as BRAKE or PCS.
- Color
- Usually red or amber flashing during an active alert; amber/yellow steady when the system is off, unavailable, or faulty. Check your owner's manual, since symbols and colors vary by manufacturer.

Why the forward collision warning light comes on
A front radar sensor, camera, or both measure the distance and closing speed to vehicles and sometimes pedestrians ahead. If a collision looks likely, the system warns with lights and sounds and, on vehicles with automatic emergency braking, can apply the brakes. Blocked sensors from snow, mud, or ice, or misalignment after a minor collision, will disable it.
Steady vs flashing
A flashing light with a beep means an active warning; brake or steer as needed. A steady amber light means the system is off, temporarily unavailable, or has a fault.
Common causes
- Real alert when closing quickly on a vehicle ahead
- System turned off in settings
- Snow, ice, mud, or bugs covering the front radar sensor or grille emblem
- Dirty or fogged windshield in front of the camera
- Sensor misaligned after a minor front impact or bumper repair
- Sensor or module fault
What to do when the forward collision warning light comes on
- If it flashes with a warning sound, look ahead and brake or steer as needed.
- If steady amber appears, check whether the system was turned off in settings.
- Clean the front sensor area and the windshield in front of the camera.
- Restart the vehicle after cleaning.
- If it persists, have the radar and camera inspected and aligned, especially after front-end damage or windshield replacement.
Symbols and colors vary by manufacturer; your owner’s manual has the exact meaning for your vehicle.
Forward Collision Warning Light FAQ
What does the forward collision warning light mean?
The Forward Collision Warning Light alerts you to an imminent risk of hitting a vehicle ahead, or, when steady amber, shows that the collision warning or automatic braking system is unavailable.
Can I keep driving with the forward collision warning light on?
Yes, the car drives normally, but if the light is steady amber the system may not warn you or brake automatically. Keep a safe following distance and have a persistent fault checked.
Why does my forward collision warning go off for no reason?
Curves, metal objects, parked cars, and bridges can occasionally trigger alerts. Frequent false alerts can also indicate a misaligned sensor.
Why is my collision warning unavailable in snow?
Snow and ice on the front sensor block its signal, so the system shuts off until the sensor is clear.
Can I still brake normally if the collision system has a fault?
Yes. A collision-system fault disables automatic warnings and braking, but the regular brakes still work normally.
