Security Light: What It Means and What to Do

The Security Light shows the status of the anti-theft immobilizer, and if it stays on or flashes rapidly when trying to start, the system may not recognize the key.

Caution
Can I keep driving? If the engine starts and runs normally, the car can be driven, but have a persistent light checked because the immobilizer may later prevent starting. If the light stays on and the engine will not start or starts and stalls, the system is not recognizing the key.
What it looks like
A car outline with a padlock or key inside it, or a key symbol alone.
Color
Usually red, sometimes amber/green. Slow flashing with the car off is normal on many vehicles. Check your owner's manual, since symbols and colors vary by manufacturer.

Also called: immobilizer light, anti-theft light, car with lock light, key light, theft deterrent light

Why the security light comes on

The key or key fob contains a transponder chip that the car reads at startup. If the code matches, the engine computer allows fuel and ignition; if not, it blocks starting. The security light blinks while parked to show the system is armed and should go out once a valid key is recognized.

Steady vs flashing

Slow blinking with the ignition off usually means the system is armed and is normal. A light that stays on or flashes rapidly with the key on, together with a no-start or stall, means the immobilizer is not accepting the key or has a fault.

Common causes

  1. Normal armed indication while parked
  2. Weak or dead key fob battery
  3. Damaged key transponder chip or unprogrammed replacement key
  4. Interference from other keys or fobs on the ring
  5. Faulty antenna ring around the ignition or start button
  6. Low vehicle battery voltage
  7. Immobilizer module or wiring fault

What to do when the security light comes on

  1. Try the spare key; if it works, the original key or its battery is likely the problem.
  2. Replace the fob battery and remove other keys or fobs from the ring.
  3. On push-button cars, hold the fob against the start button or the location shown in the manual.
  4. Check the vehicle battery voltage, since low voltage can confuse the system.
  5. Follow the owner's manual relearn or wait procedure if one applies.
  6. If the car still will not start, have the immobilizer system diagnosed.

Symbols and colors vary by manufacturer; your owner’s manual has the exact meaning for your vehicle.

Security Light FAQ

What does the security light mean?

The Security Light shows the status of the anti-theft immobilizer, and if it stays on or flashes rapidly when trying to start, the system may not recognize the key.

Can I keep driving with the security light on?

If the engine starts and runs normally, the car can be driven, but have a persistent light checked because the immobilizer may later prevent starting. If the light stays on and the engine will not start or starts and stalls, the system is not recognizing the key.

Is it normal for the security light to blink when the car is off?

Yes, on many vehicles a slow blink shows the theft-deterrent system is armed.

Why won't my car start with the security light on?

The immobilizer is not recognizing the key, often due to a weak fob battery, a damaged key chip, or an unprogrammed key.

Can a dead car battery cause the security light to stay on?

Yes. Low voltage can prevent the modules from communicating correctly, causing the immobilizer to block starting.
