Why the seat belt light comes on
Buckle switches report whether each belt is latched, and a weight or occupancy sensor in the passenger seat detects whether someone is seated. If a seat is occupied and unbuckled, the light and chime remind occupants. Federal standards require at least a driver reminder.
Common causes
- Driver or passenger not buckled
- Heavy objects on the passenger seat triggering the occupancy sensor
- Faulty or dirty buckle switch
- Loose wiring under the seat
- Occupant classification sensor fault
What to do when the seat belt light comes on
- Make sure every occupant is buckled.
- Move bags or heavy items off the passenger seat or buckle the belt behind them.
- Press the buckle firmly until it latches and check for debris in the buckle.
- If it stays on, have the buckle switch and seat wiring checked.
- Check whether the airbag light is also on, which would point to a restraint-system fault.
Symbols and colors vary by manufacturer; your owner’s manual has the exact meaning for your vehicle.
Seat Belt Light FAQ
What does the seat belt light mean?
The Seat Belt Light means the driver or a front passenger is not buckled, or the system thinks a seat is occupied without a fastened belt.
Can I keep driving with the seat belt light on?
Buckle up before driving. If the light stays on with all occupants buckled, the car will drive normally, but have the buckle switch or occupant sensor checked, since related faults can affect airbag operation.
Why is the seat belt light on when no one is in the passenger seat?
A bag or object on the seat can trigger the occupancy sensor. Move it or buckle the belt.
Why does the seat belt light stay on when I'm buckled?
A faulty buckle switch, debris in the buckle, or a loose connector under the seat are common causes.
Is a seat belt light fault related to airbags?
It can be. Buckle switches and seat sensors feed the airbag system, so related faults may also turn on the airbag light.
