Why the low fuel light comes on
A float-type sending unit in the fuel tank reports fuel level to the instrument cluster. When the level drops to a set reserve, the light turns on. Many vehicles also show a distance-to-empty estimate, which is based on recent fuel economy and can change quickly.
Common causes
- Fuel level has reached the reserve threshold
- Faulty fuel level sending unit giving a false low reading
- Wiring or instrument cluster fault
- Fuel sloshing on hills or turns causing the light to flicker near reserve
What to do when the low fuel light comes on
- Plan to refuel at the next convenient station.
- Drive smoothly and avoid long highway stretches without stations.
- Check the arrow next to the symbol to see which side the fuel door is on.
- If the light stays on after filling, have the fuel level sender and wiring checked.
- Avoid regularly driving on very low fuel, since many in-tank pumps rely on fuel for cooling.
Symbols and colors vary by manufacturer; your owner’s manual has the exact meaning for your vehicle.

Low Fuel Light FAQ
What does the low fuel light mean?
The Low Fuel Light means the fuel tank has reached its reserve level and you should refuel soon.
Can I keep driving with the low fuel light on?
Yes, but refuel as soon as practical. The remaining range varies by vehicle, driving conditions, and gauge accuracy, and running the tank very low can strain the fuel pump or leave you stranded.
How far can I drive once the low fuel light comes on?
It varies widely by vehicle and conditions. Treat the light as a signal to refuel soon rather than as a guaranteed range.
Is it bad to drive with the fuel light on?
Occasionally it is fine, but frequently running near empty can draw sediment toward the pump and let the pump run hotter, which can shorten its life.
Why does my low fuel light stay on after filling up?
A faulty fuel level sensor or wiring is the usual cause. The fuel gauge may also be inaccurate in that case.
