Lane Departure Warning Light: What It Means and What to Do
The Lane Departure Warning Light shows the status of the camera-based system that alerts you when the car drifts out of its lane, and amber means it is unavailable or faulty.
- What it looks like
- A car viewed from above or behind positioned between two lane lines, sometimes with OFF or an exclamation point.
- Color
- Green or white when the system is active and detecting lanes, gray when on but not detecting lanes, and amber/yellow when it is off or has a fault. Some vehicles flash it during an alert. Check your owner's manual, since symbols and colors vary by manufacturer.

Why the lane departure warning light comes on
A forward-facing camera, usually behind the windshield near the mirror, reads lane markings and warns with a sound, vibration, or steering nudge when the car crosses a line without a turn signal. The system temporarily turns off when markings are faded, covered by snow, or the camera view is blocked, and it can fault if the camera is misaligned or its calibration is lost.
Steady vs flashing
Green or white steady means active. A flash or chime means it is warning you of lane drift. Amber steady means the system is off, temporarily unavailable, or faulty.
Common causes
- System turned off with a button or settings menu
- Dirty, fogged, or iced windshield in front of the camera
- Faded, missing, or snow-covered lane markings
- Heavy rain, glare, or darkness limiting camera view
- Camera needs recalibration after windshield replacement or alignment
- Camera or module fault
What to do when the lane departure warning light comes on
- Check whether the system has been turned off and turn it back on if desired.
- Clean the windshield in front of the camera, inside and out.
- Wait for better conditions if the light appeared in heavy rain, snow, or on poorly marked roads.
- Restart the vehicle to see if the system resets.
- If the light persists, have the camera checked and calibrated, particularly after glass or front-end work.
Symbols and colors vary by manufacturer; your owner’s manual has the exact meaning for your vehicle.
Lane Departure Warning Light FAQ
What does the lane departure warning light mean?
The Lane Departure Warning Light shows the status of the camera-based system that alerts you when the car drifts out of its lane, and amber means it is unavailable or faulty.
Can I keep driving with the lane departure warning light on?
Yes. The vehicle drives normally without lane departure warning or lane keeping assist, so stay attentive. Have a persistent amber light checked, especially after a windshield replacement or front-end repair.
Why does my lane departure warning keep turning off?
The camera needs clear lane markings and a clean view. Faded lines, weather, glare, and a dirty windshield all cause it to become temporarily unavailable.
Does a new windshield affect lane departure warning?
Yes. The camera is mounted to the windshield, so replacement usually requires recalibration for it to aim correctly.
Is lane departure warning the same as lane keeping assist?
Not exactly. Warning systems only alert you, while lane keeping assist can apply gentle steering to help keep the car centered. Many vehicles have both under one menu.
