Why the Gallardo exists

Audi identified in 1998 the need for a second, smaller Lamborghini range to support sales of the V12 models. The Gallardo’s shape started from Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Calà concept for Italdesign and was finished by Centro Stile under Luc Donckerwolke.

Its success led directly to the Huracán and Temerario. Lamborghini notes that 6-speed manual cars are rarer than E-gear cars.[1]

Fuel economy

EPA rates the 2004 Gallardo with E-gear at 11 mpg combined. The 5.2-liter coupe from 2009 improved to 16 mpg combined with E-gear and 15 with the manual.[2][3][4]

What to check before buying a used Gallardo

Before buying a used Gallardo, check the VIN against the NHTSA recall campaigns that name it: a 2004–2006 power-steering line campaign, a 2007–2009 carbon-ceramic brake rotor screw campaign, and a 2011–2014 engine software campaign. Each was a free dealer repair, so ask for records showing the work was done.

  • 2004–2006 cars: power steering update (12V430000)

High-pressure steering pipes near the hydraulic pump could leak; dealers updated the power steering system.[5]

  • 2007–2009 cars with carbon-ceramic brakes: rotor screws (13V471000)

Stainless-steel screws securing the brake rotors could fail after exposure to salt; dealers replaced the screws.[5]

  • 2011–2014 cars: ECU reflash (18V833000)

Engine software could erase trouble codes and fail to light warning lamps; dealers reflashed the engine control unit.[5]

  • Confirm transmission type

Gallardos were built with a 6-speed manual or the sequential E-gear; the car’s records should match what is fitted.[1]
