Top 5 most expensive Porsches sold at auction
Race cars hold every top spot. Motorsport Magazine's October 2025 ranking of public auction results:
| Car | Price | Sold | Auction |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1970 Porsche 917K | $14.08 million | August 2017 | Gooding & Company, Pebble Beach |
| 1982 Porsche 956 | $10.12 million | 2015 | Gooding & Company, Pebble Beach |
| 1997 Porsche 911 GT1 | $7.04 million | 2024 | Broad Arrow, Monterey |
| 1985 Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar | $5.94 million | 2018 | RM Sotheby’s, Porsche 70th Anniversary sale (Atlanta) |
| 1972 Porsche 917/10 Spyder | $5.83 million | 2012 | Mecum, Monterey |
The record 917K, chassis 917-024, appeared in Steve McQueen's 1971 film Le Mans. A second Le Mans 917K, chassis 917-022, crossed the block at Mecum Kissimmee in January 2025; reports put the high bid near $25 million, but the car did not sell, so it does not count as a sale. The fourth-place car is a 959-family Paris-Dakar rally car.

Why spec matters most at the top
On collectible Porsches, two cars of the same model can be far apart in price because of factory color, gearbox and options. A Paint to Sample color, a manual gearbox or a Weissach package can each separate a car from the rest of the market — see Porsche options that add resale value. Production volume matters too: check Porsche production numbers for how many were built.
