What changed in the 924S

The 924S returned the 924 body to the US with Porsche's own 2.5-liter four from the 944, along with 944 brakes and chassis parts. It was the first 924 with a Porsche-built engine. For 1988 a compression increase raised output (Porsche: 150 PS to 160 PS), and production of the 924 line ended that year after just over 150,000 cars in total.

What changed in the 924

Conceived as a Volkswagen project (EA 425) to replace the 914, the 924 was bought back by Porsche when VW cancelled it, and was built at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. It was Porsche's first car with a water-cooled front engine and a rear transaxle, using a 2.0-liter four derived from an Audi/VW unit. US cars were detuned for emissions compared with the 125 PS European engine, and the 924 left the US market after 1982 while continuing elsewhere through 1985. The 924 Turbo (Type 931) arrived for 1980 in the US; the homologation 924 Carrera GT was never sold in the US.
