What changed in the 928
Premiered at Geneva in March 1977 and initially meant to succeed the 911, the 928 was Porsche's first production V8 car: a water-cooled aluminium 90-degree V8 in front, a rear transaxle, aluminium doors, front wings and bonnet, and the passive-steering Weissach rear axle. It was named European Car of the Year for 1978. Displacement grew from 4.5 to 4.7, 5.0 and finally 5.4 liters; the US received the 32-valve 5.0 a year ahead of Europe (1985), while the S4, GT and GTS were near world-spec cars. Porsche built 61,056 928s through 1995.
