What a BMW VIN reveals
A BMW's 17-character VIN encodes its plant, model, body, engine, and model year. The World Manufacturer Identifier reveals origin: WBA marks standard German-built BMWs (5 Series, 7 Series), WBS designates BMW M GmbH performance cars, and 5UX/5YM identify SUVs built at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. Spartanburg assembles the X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and XM, while the U.S.-market 3 Series and 2 Series are built in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.
