What a Chevrolet VIN reveals
Every Chevrolet built since 1981 carries a 17-character VIN. The first three characters (WMI) identify origin: 1G1 is a U.S.-built Chevrolet passenger car, 1GC a U.S.-built Chevrolet truck/SUV, while 3G prefixes denote Mexico-built GM vehicles. Characters 4-8 describe body, engine, and restraints; character 9 is a check digit; character 10 is the model year; character 11 is the assembly plant; and characters 12-17 are the sequential serial number.
