What a Subaru VIN reveals
A Subaru VIN is a 17-character code: characters 1-3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. WMIs beginning 4S3 or 4S4 mark vehicles assembled in the U.S. at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) in Lafayette, Indiana, while JF1 and JF2 mark Subarus assembled in Japan (Gunma). Position 10 encodes model year and position 11 the plant; the last six digits are the unique serial. Assembly origin shifts by model year, so always verify a specific VIN.
