What a Hyundai VIN reveals
Every Hyundai uses a 17-character VIN encoding country, plant, model, body, engine, model year and a sequential serial. The first three characters (WMI) reveal origin: VINs starting 5NP or 5NM mark vehicles built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) in Montgomery — 5NP passenger cars, 5NM SUVs — while KMH and KM8 indicate South Korea-built Hyundais. Hyundai's new Metaplant in Bryan County, Georgia (HMGMA) now builds U.S. EVs including the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9.
