What a Jeep VIN reveals
A Jeep VIN is 17 characters. The first three (the WMI) identify the maker and country: 1C4 and 1J4/1J8 are U.S.-built FCA US/Jeep vehicles, while 3C4 denotes Stellantis assembly in Mexico. Characters 4-8 encode model, body, engine and restraints; the 10th is model year and the 11th the plant. For U.S. buyers, plant origin matters: the Wrangler and Gladiator are built in Toledo, Ohio, and the Grand Cherokee in Detroit (Jefferson North / Mack).
