What a Honda VIN reveals

Every Honda built since 1981 carries a 17-character VIN. The first three characters (the World Manufacturer Identifier) reveal the build country and maker: 1HG, 2HG and 5J6 denote U.S.-assembled Hondas, 2HK U.S./Canada light trucks, 19X Canada, and JHM/JHL Japan-built cars. Following characters encode model, body, engine, restraint system, a check digit, model year and the assembly plant, ending in a unique serial number — so the VIN alone confirms where and how your Honda was built.
