What a Toyota VIN reveals
A Toyota VIN is 17 characters. The first three — the World Manufacturer Identifier — reveal where it was built: JTD, JTE, JTM and similar 'JT' codes mark vehicles assembled in Japan, while 4T1, 4T3 and 5TD/5TF indicate U.S. assembly and 2T identifies Canada-built Toyotas. The rest encodes model, body, engine, restraint system, a check digit, model year, plant code, and serial number. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) in Georgetown — Toyota's largest plant worldwide — builds the Camry and now the RAV4 Hybrid.
