What a Nissan VIN reveals
A Nissan VIN is a 17-character code: the first three (WMI) identify maker and origin, characters 4-8 describe model, body, engine and restraints, character 9 is a check digit, character 10 is model year, and 11-17 are plant and serial. Nissan WMIs starting 1N4/1N6 indicate U.S. assembly (Smyrna, Tennessee or Canton, Mississippi); JN1/JN8 indicate Japan-built vehicles; 3N1 indicates Mexico-built. A U.S. WMI means final assembly in North America, not that every part is domestic.
