Chassis code: G60 sedan
What changed in the G60
The eighth-generation 5 Series grew to 199.2 in long on a 117.9-in wheelbase and, for the first time, offered a fully electric version (badged i5) on the same body. US gas models launched with a 48V mild-hybrid B48 four-cylinder in the 530i and a B58 inline-six in the 540i xDrive, while the i5 arrived as the rear-drive eDrive40 and the dual-motor i5 M60 xDrive. For 2025 BMW added the all-wheel-drive i5 xDrive40 and the 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid, which pairs the six-cylinder with an electric motor in the 8-speed automatic. For 2026 changes were minor (new colors, faster 550e onboard charging), and the i5's EPA range estimates rose. The G61 Touring wagon is not sold in the US.

Chassis code: G30 sedan · LCI (facelift) from the 2021 model year
What changed in the G30
The G30 arrived for 2017 as a sedan-only line in the US, with a 2.0L turbo four in the 530i and the B58 turbo six in the 540i, both paired with an 8-speed automatic and available xDrive. The 530e plug-in hybrid, the V8 M550i xDrive and the 540d xDrive diesel followed for 2018. The 2021 LCI restyled the front and rear, raised the 530e's peak output with an XtraBoost function and gave the M550i a much stronger V8; the diesel was gone by then. The G31 Touring wagon was not sold in the US.

Chassis codes: F10 sedan · F07 gran turismo · LCI (facelift) from the 2014 model year
What changed in the F10
The F10 sedan replaced the E60 for 2011 with the turbocharged N55 six in the 535i, a twin-turbo V8 in the 550i, and an 8-speed automatic across the range (a 6-speed manual stayed available early on). The 528i switched from a naturally aspirated six to the turbocharged N20 four for 2012, and the ActiveHybrid 5 joined soon after. The 2014 LCI brought a revised, stronger V8 for the 550i and added the 535d diesel. The hatchback-style 5 Series Gran Turismo (F07) was sold alongside the sedan; the F11 Touring wagon was not offered in the US.

What changed in the E39
The E39 arrived for 1997 with a largely aluminum suspension and a stiffer body than the E34 it replaced. Frequently asked questions
What are the BMW 5 Series generations and chassis codes?
The BMW 5 Series has been sold in the US in 5 generations, each known by its chassis code: E39 (1997–2003), E60/E61 (2004–2010), F10/F07 (2011–2016), G30 (2017–2023), G60 (2024–present).
How much horsepower does the G60 530i have?
The G60 530i (2024–present) makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from its 2.0L turbo inline-4 (48V mild hybrid) (B48), with a BMW-claimed 0–60 mph time of 5.9 seconds (automatic) and a 130 mph top speed.
How much horsepower does the G30 M550i xDrive have?
The G30 M550i xDrive (2021–2023) makes 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque from its 4.4L twin-turbo V8 (N63), with a BMW-claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds (automatic).
What is the most powerful and quickest BMW 5 Series?
The most powerful 5 Series listed here is the G60 i5 M60 xDrive at 593 hp. The quickest 0–60 mph figure is 3.6 seconds for the G30 M550i xDrive (BMW-claimed, automatic).
What changed in the G60 BMW 5 Series?
How can I see how a specific BMW 5 Series was optioned from the factory?
Spec tables show what each trim offered; the options on an individual car are recorded against its VIN. A BMW build sheet decoded from the VIN lists the factory option codes, original paint and upholstery as the car was built.
