How to shop smart for a used SUV
- Pick the model, then the generation. Years to avoid and known issues are generation-specific, so narrow to the right model years before you look at listings.
- Search with your ZIP and compare several of the same model, year range and mileage. One listing tells you little; five tell you the market.
- Run the VIN on your shortlist for title brands, odometer history, accidents and open recalls before you drive anywhere.
- Decode the VIN or pull the build sheet to confirm the trim, engine and options are what the listing claims.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection, then negotiate the vehicle price first and fees second. Refuse add-ons you did not ask for.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I pay for a used SUV?
Used prices depend on year, mileage and condition, so compare several listings for the same model near you. For reference, verified CarWhere buyers paid a typical 4.9% below MSRP on new versions of these models, which sets a ceiling on what a late-model used one is worth. Check each model page for the years to avoid before you make an offer.
What is the best time to buy a used SUV?
CarWhere's best-time research finds new-car discounts have historically been largest from October through December, and January is strongest for used cars. The seasonal edge is small, though: average discounts in CarWhere's verified deals move by only a point or two between periods, so negotiating matters more than timing.

Sources and method
MSRPs come from CarWhere's model research, which records manufacturer-published prices (see each model page for dated sources). Deal figures are CarWhere's own approved, deduplicated verified purchases with an exact model match; a model shows a median only with at least 5 deals. This page lists no inventory — live listings appear only after you search with your ZIP.
